Anyone have a wall-hung toilet at home? Experiences?

We’re about to start gutting and remodeling one of our bathrooms. It’s a very small one, and I like the idea of a wall-hung toilet to save a little space (and also because it’s easy to clean the floor underneath). I’m looking at the Toto model, because we also want to put a Washlet on top, and that’s the only one that seems to be the right shape. The parts that go in the wall can, apparently, be a less expensive brand.

Access to the top of the tank is through the flush actuator, which is a plate on the wall above the toilet, and which is removable, leaving a hole big enough to reach through to jiggle things if necessary. All the plumbing supply places say (of course) that these things are very reliable and such reaching is never necessary. The literature says that the tanks are engineered to a higher standard than regular tanks, since they are in the wall. All such sales material is hereby taken with a grain of salt.

So I’d love to hear any first-hand (or second-hand!) experience from y’all about wall-hung toilets at home. I know they are standard in commercial applications, but I think this is pretty different so those would not help me much.

In terms of performance, I wouldn’t rate wall hung toilets any better than some of the other top performing TOTO models. They do have a couple of advantages. Looks and the ability to clean under them are among the top. Getting to set them at your custom height is another. The downside is the cost and the loss of floor space. Wall hung toilets require a 6" stud wall to accommodate the flush actuator. Make sure you take this into account.

The ability to put a Washlet on it is a biggie, IMO. A Washlet seems like a needless luxury until you actually use one.

My only experience with them is at work. I currently work in a doctor’s office where a lot of bariatric patients are seen. We had to put reinforcement “sticks” under them to hold the extra weight.

I’m not sure if that was to prevent an accident waiting to happen, or if one already had.

What is the Washlet?

I didn’t know either so I looked it up. I’m glad I did, because it included this sentence:

This is the toilet I had while staying in Little Tokyo. I never knew it had a name. I was just like, “What is this? Some kind of electronic bidet?”

I can’t be the only one to have misread that as ‘well-hung toilet.’

During a tour of a Frank Lloyd Wright house, the guide credited Wright with inventing the wall hung toilet.

No, you’re not. I saw the thread, just now, and the image that immediately came to mind was a toilet with a huge 12" dildo hanging down just under the bowl. Kinda funny to think what would happen if some “prim & proper” old bat walked in on you while you’re taking a dump.

Who is going to install it and is the current system cast iron or PVC pipe? Are you going to tear out large junks of the floor or tear out the ceiling below?

What Merneith posted.
Actually the common models sold in the US have wall mounted controls. We had one at the design studio where I used to work. Heavenly.

Ah. My aunt and uncle have one of these. I privately referred to it as an SUV toilet. :stuck_out_tongue:

Nope. Definitely piqued my curiosity.
