I was just wondering…does anyone know where I can find the photos the Soviets took of Hitler’s charred remains, after they’d been recovered from the crater in front of the Führerbunker?
I’ve looked online, but so far, all I’ve been able to find are the pictures of Hitler’s doppelganger’s corpse, and a few of the chunks of his skull the Russians keep in Moscow. Can anyone help?
Well I know I’ve seen at least one, from after the Russians moved the bodies (Hitler and Eva) to ammunition crates after digging them up, on the Discovery channel and PBS over the years.
There wasn’t much detail to be made out—at all—but it was supposed to be the real deal.
This is one of the big mysteries of WWII. apparently, the Russians didn’t realize that hitler had been cremated in a bomb crater. and for years afterwards, Stalin forbade the release of any information regarding hitler’s corpse. i don’t think anything was released til long after Stalin’s death (1954). As far as theother coccupants of the Fuhrerbunker-did they cut and run after der fuhrer offed himself? Supposedly, the Waffen SS were shoting deserters on sight-it was a dangerous time to be a nazi.
Not the corpse you’re looking for, but there’s an explicit B&W photo of Joseph Goebbels’ partially charred corpse in The Hitler Book. (This is the intimate account of Hitler as a leader and personality, with an emphasis on the last days of WWII, substantiated in part by exhaustive interviews with Hitler’s manservant and one of his bodyguards, researched and written by OGPU officers for a readership of one – Joseph Stalin – and which was recently published for the first time.)
I should’ve specified before that Goebbels’ corpse is probably the closest we’ll get to a photo of Hitler post-immolation and pre-burial. Like Hitler, Goebbels (and Magda and their six children) retreated to the bunker as the end loomed near. And like Hitler, Goebbels shot himself and his body was doused with gasoline and burned in the courtyard just outside the bunker entrance.
It turns out that getting the gasoline-flambe treatment doesn’t really consume or cremate your remains so much as just unevenly blacken and char them, a la redfish prepared by a rookie Cajun chef. You still have what looks like 98% of the body to bury… ick.
