Anyone have one of those mattresses made from space-age foam?

Who has purchased one of those? Is it more comfortable? Is it costly? I am thinking about buying one.

You mean like a Tempur-pedic?

Yup, got one a year ago on their “free 90 day” thingy. I hated it, my husband hated it. I hated it because it was as hard as a rock, and I like soft matresses. My husband hated it because it was hard as a rock, and he likes hard matresses.

In addition, it’s very pricey ($1700 for a queen size), and it’s not even ALL space-age foam. It’s normal foam, with about 6 inches of space-age foam on the top.

I know others here really like them, though. I’m sure they’ll be along soon.

We were considering one, but I opted against it. I just don’t like foam.

My girlfriend, however, absolutely loves hers. She has chronic back problems due to a bad accident years ago. She’s also 200 lbs overweight, and I think that may have some bearing on it.

Do they have any bounce to them? That’s a requirement for any bed I buy and the reason why I think futons suck (besides the fact that they feel like you’re laying on a board).

I have one (latex foam over a boxspring) and I LOOOOVE it.

It feels a bit odd and overly firm for the first couple minutes you lay on one.
But all the stuff they say about no pressure spots and everything must be true, becuase it’s the only mattress I’ve ever slept on where I can:

  • sleep on my back comfortably.
  • sleep without waking up to toss and turn every couple hours.

I’ve fallen asleep laying on my back and woken up in the exact same position >8 hours later! That’s saying something for someone who always got her own bed on family vacations because she tossed so much no-one wanted to share with her.

I sleep much better and longer (why does that sound like penis enlargement spam?) than ever, and it makes a difference in my whole day.

Mine is from Sichel.

I guess you could say I’m a fan.

Oooh, I want the round bed!

We didn’t want to fork over so much money for a mattress, so we bought an “off-brand” mattress pad for $100 at Sam’s Club. Oh my heavens, we love it! My husband is 31 and can now finally fall asleep on his back. I fall asleep on my side and wake up in the same position (unless I roll over before I fall asleep). Everyone who has tried it out has adored it.

Since ours is a mattress pad, it’s not at all hard. It’s just about two inches of the foam (which seems to be perfect) and has a removable, washable cover as well. Instead of buying a new bed for the guest room, we’re going to buy another one of the mattress pads to go on top of the 20-year old set that we have.

Yeah, the web site is exceedingly cheesey.
“Romantic Rounds”, custom shapes.

But the beds are comfy!
(Mine is a plain old rectangle, BTW.)

The other great thing I forgot to mention - it has a great “dampening effect”. In other words, if your bedmate moves, rolls over, gets out of bed, whatever, the whole mattress doesn’t move (and wake you up) - you hardly feel it. (No, that’s not a comment on my sex life! The mattress works just fine for that.)

Actually, since the boxspring is pretty standard and it’s the foam that’s the “magic”, I think Avarie537’s suggestion of putting one of those 2" thick foam toppers on a “regular” mattress/boxspring might be a good inexpensive solution. Won’t get the “dampening”, but still would get the restful sleep.

Nope, no bounce at all.

Put it this way: I slept on a futon for years and thought it was fine. But the tempur-pedic was WAY too hard for me.
