Foam Mattress

Hubby and I are planning on buying a new mattress soon. We’re thinking about the kind that are made of really dense “space age material” foam stuff. (The commercials always refer to it as space age material).

Do any of the Dopers have one of these mattresses? Are you pleased with it? How much did you pay? (We have a Queen sized bed).

Thanks.

There’s a few threads on Tempur-pedic mattresses; do a search and you’ll find one. I’d do it for you, but I’m too lazy.

Most people on the SDMB like their TP mattresses. Me and my husband tried one out last spring - if you buy from Tempur-pedic they give you a 3 month trial period. We ended up sending it back. I hated it - it was like sleeping on a board, and I like soft squishy mattresses much better than hard ones. It was very expensive, too - $1700 for a queen size mattress and platform thingy that they use instead of a box spring. Icky hard bed. Yuk.

My wife and I bought one outright several years ago…It is now in the spare bedroom…Guests say they love it, I say “Ok sleep on it for an extended period…”

Athena is right…eventually it feels like you are sleeping on a nice piece of aged oak!

Thanks for the input, guys! If I get a few more responses in this vein, it might save us a good bit of dough, as we can buy a decent mattress/ box spring set for less than half of what a Tempur-Pedic would run.

Gee, I always thought TP mattresses would be wonderful. I have a pillow made of a similar material and I love it. Huh.

A trend that I noticed, if you sleep on your back you will generally like a hard mattress, if on your side or stomach then a softer one.

Me too, I have a TP pillow and adore it, it seems so SOFT to me. Conforms exactly to your neck, head and so on.

The mattresses don’t do the same?

Check out the “matress-toppers”. (I believe one is called The Ultimate Sleep System). They are just the first couple of inches of the stuff in the Tempur-Pedic, and according to the info-mercial, that’s all you’re supposed to need.

As you might expect they’re a lot less (Queen, I believe is 299.00)

I’ve been thinking of getting one myself, but haven’t yet because of the holidays.

Of course if money isn’t a concern, go for the real thing.

I got a 2" thick mattress pad of this material and I loved it! It was just a little bit of cushioning on my mattress. It’s now on the boat, but I plan to buy another for our king bed after we move and build our new place. If you’d like, I could try to find the site where I ordered it. It was quick service and a good price - I think less than $150 for a 2" thick queen size pad.

Quasi, there has never been a time in my life when money hasn’t been a concern! We are blessed that hubby just finished a largish contract for which he got paid in a lump sum, which allows us to buy some stuff we’ve been needing for the house. OUr two oldest girls who share a room will be getting bunk beds, and we will be getting some kind of new mattress or topper.

FairyChatMom, thanks for emailing me the website info, but we ended up buying a memory foam mattress pad today at Sam’s Club. It was only $107.00 for a Queen size, and Sam’s has good return policies, so if we decide we hate it in a couple of weeks, we can take it back. So far, it feels nice, but it was compressed for shipping and the instructions say it can take up to 48 hours to totally decompress. So, we’ll see how it goes.

For anyone else who is considering a TP, mine has been one of the best investments of my life! Yes, it is firm, but it totally adjusts to my body and cradles it. I have better support for my back and I sleep better.

Also, my husband’s movements during the night aren’t noticeable to me.

It is the most comfortable bed that I have ever slept on.

My mom loves her TP mattress, in fact she just bought an adjustable one. They don’t do anything for me. I had one of the mattress pads, but I took it off and I really think I sleep better without it so apparently my problem was totally just me. My aunt also has one and likes it.

My husband loves our new foam mattress. I feel like I’m being engulfed by it. However, it’s better than our old mattress, which had lumps and dips in all the wrong places.

Our new mattress emitted a distinct odor for the first couple of days, too. So if you get one, you might want to let it air out before you sleep on it, if you possibly can.

Yeah, we noticed this phenomenon, too. Hubby and I, both being over 40, tend to each get up once during the night to use the bathroom. But I didn’t feel him getting up, and he didn’t feel me getting up.

Yes, it definitely has a smell to it (although it’s nothing I can’t live with), but the instructions that came with it said that it’s not dangerous to sleep on, and that the smell will dissipate in a couple of days. Matter of fact, it was less noticeable this morning. We slept quite comfortably last night. Now it remains to be seen if it will continue being comfy.
