Generally the Grammy’s aren’t my bag, but seeing as how the Simpson’s just ended I switched over for a look see, and I caught the White Stripes performance. My god…. that kicked so much ass.
They were okay…Prince and Beyonce kicked serious AZZZ!!!
I wasn’t planning to watch the Grammys either, but I caught the White Stripes right after The Simpsons, and I was impressed as always. This year I actually like three bands with Grammy nominations: the Stripes, Outkast, and Evanescence. While I don’t put a lot of credence in the award, I would like to see them all do well.
Outkast won for Speakerboxx/Love Below… best rap album.
I thought Sting and Sean Paul were awesome.
The White Stripes rock harder than anyone. That was amazing. Best performance on the show. I was a little disappointed when they started playing ‘Seven Nation Army’, because I’m a little tired of that song, but then he kicked it over into “Death Letter” by Son House and blew the doors off the dump. That’s one of my favorite Stripes songs.
I’ve got a bunch of videos of them from the various shows they’ve been on, and they always deliver that kind of performance. Their SNL appearances and last year’s appearance at the the American Music Awards just rocked. I’d love to see them live.
And Warren Zevon won two Grammys, and had a little mini-tribute at the end of the ‘In Memoriam’ section. That was fantastic. Other than that, the rest of the show pretty much sucked. Especially when the Recording Industry suit came out and played that extremely lame anti-filesharing video and made that little plea about not having the government cut funding for music.
I tend to not take the Grammys very seriously, but they put a bit of effort into it this year. Outkast livened things up.
The Funk interlude was fun. Hope George Clinton is feeling better these days.
I liked the White Stripes, and very much appreciated the tribute to Zevon, also liked seeing June Carter Cash get a posthumous award.
Also enjoyed Prince and Beyonce, and Sting, Vince Gill, the Neptunes guy and Dave Matthews doing “I Saw Her Standing There.” Some of us recall when that single first came out, it was the first record I ever bought. (Still have it, too.)
Probably nobody paid much attention, but Ella Jenkins’ lifetime achievement Grammy was much deserved; she has done much to help introduce music to young children.
I tuned in ONLY for George and Parliament. If I’d know Prince was going to perform I would have watched that, too.
I’m a rocker from waaaay back, and I thought the White Stripes were just OK. He’s a talented guitarist, but the drummer was lame (and looked rather bored) and the sound was too raw and one-dimensional. Guess that puts me in the “geezer” column. Sigh…it had to happen some time.
This is also going to show my age, but I thought the White Stripes performance was as embarrassing compared to all the great music that surrounded them as Adam Ant’s gyrations were at the Motown 25th Anniversary Celebration.
It’s hard to pick a favorite but I was blown away by Chick Corea and the Foo Fighters. Great pairing.
Performance of the evening for me was Robert Randolph & the Family Band. But Jack and Meg tore it up pretty good too. I came in toward the end of Seven Nation Army, but from what I saw it was a pretty sweet performance.
Lame performance of the evening has to go to Foo Fighters. But then again, I’m not a big jazz piano fan.
Happy
I missed The White Stripes, but having seen them in concert five times now, I’m pretty sure I know what I missed… and I’m still pissed I missed it. The most recent concert of their I went to, Jack did a solo on “Ball and Biscuit” that practically had me in tears.
I’m mad I missed Prince and Beyonce, too. Anyone know if video of those two performances is online anywhere?
But damn did Dre doing “Hey Ya!” with the dancing indian girls and the marching band rock my world. I rarely feel the need to dance while watching TV, but I was bouncing all of the place during that one!
I agreed with almost every award that I had enough knowledge of the nominees to have an opinion on. I was a little mad that “Clocks” won over “Hey Ya!” and “Crazy In Love” for best song (and I love “Clocks”), but both Outkast and Beyonce got their fair share of trophies.
The White Stripes guitarist is pretty good, but are they still auditioning bass players or what? Or, are they so cool because, like, they don’t HAVE a bass player, man? Maybe they can’t afford a bass player because of money lost to downloading. Also, keyboards and a small (maybe three piece) horn section would go a long way towards improving their sound. Oh, and backup singers. Maybe a better drummer too.
Anyway when they break up I might buy some of his solo work, but I’m not sure I would buy any of her’s.
the story goes that they like the sound without the extras that a bass player and other musicians would add to it. Though on there is a keyboard on some of their songs, and the occassinal harmonic on some of their older, bluesy stuff.
I was trying to boycott the Grammy’s this year, which basically came down to me trying to ignore the TV while my roommate was watching. But when the came on, I HAD to watch. They rock harder than anyone. They rock so hard I almost didn’t notice Jack’s obnoxious spandex pants. Almost.
I saw them live in DC a few months back and they were so awesome. THey always turn in great performances.
The White Stripes were the highlight of the Grammys for me. They rock so gooood!! That and madonna, but all she did was flap her word-hole.
No, the worst one was Timberlake with Sandoval. Bad grouping…
The highlight of the night was Beck introducing the White Stripes. But seriously folks, that Jack White rocks it. He scares me a bit, but I think I’d like to get to know him.
Sick of that Foo Fighters song, but the collaboration and changes at the beginning of the act were great. I always hope that Dave Grohl won’t scream too hard and swallow his gum.
Warren Zevon…sigh. Nice, but don’t let Billy Bob stand too close to the microphone.
So Justin was required by CBS to make a verbal apology in order to be on the show, and Janet refused to do it? That’s what I heard, anyway.
Meg’s great! If she was Keith Moon or something, it wouldn’t suit the music. That raw blues-punk sound needs her sloppy little-kid drumming.
And what’s with the critique of them being too “raw”?
I dunno. Some bands are too good for a wider audience.
I love Jack, but Meg is awful. The drumming on the albums is fine (doesn’t Jack do it?) but every time I’ve seen them live on TV it seems like she just has no sense of rhythm.
heh–that’s how I always felt about Warren Zevon.
This is one geezer who really likes the White Stripes.
I have to admit, a couple years ago when I first heard of them, the red and white are-they-married-or-what schtick really turned me off.
But the music is great.
Meanwhile, my 14 year old son yells at me to Turn That Down.
