That’ll be Joss Stone i’d imagine…16 year old brunette girl? She’s a British singer, she’s actually pretty good but maybe her performance was shit, who knows? I thought her cover of that song was kinda funky and bluesy but I can see what you mean about ‘department store’ music. Joss Stone is infinitly inferior to Amy Winehouse for quality blues/funk IMHO.
I liked the performance, but not as much as when I saw them in concert and they blew the roof off of the dump. My wife, who is a Britney/Christina fan, even liked the show.
Meg drums like shit. It is an accepted fact. Stop making excuses. They are supposed to sound like two kids, brother and sister, rocking on out on old, second hand, cheap equipment. For the album Elephant, they didn’t use a single piece of equipment that was made later than the 60s.
I saw Robert Randolph in concert in September. He is an good pedal steel player, but I agree that his sound is rather one-dimensional. Somewhere between Sly and the Family Stone and Jimi Hendrix. At the concert, he covered Voodoo Chile.
I saw George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic last year as well, and it strikes me how they are deteriorating. Good funk needs to be tight, or else it is unlistenable. They still have their moments of tightness, but most of the time it seems on the verge of falling apart. Their performance at the Grammys was anything but tight.
I haven’t heard Amy Winehouse, but I’ve been incredibly impressed by what I’ve heard from Joss Stone. I love her version of “Fell In Love With A Boy”! Several prominent music critics have compared her to Dusty Springfield, and I can see it and hear it. I honestly think she’s one singer to watch, who will only get better with age. (And I’m not just talking about the celebrating that will commence when she turns 18!)
One of the best live performances I’ve ever seen!(http://web.ics.purdue.edu/~gcerbus/WhiteStripes/7NA%20&%20Death%20Letter%20-%20Grammy%20Awards.mpg). A 7NA/Death Letter medley!? On the Grammys!? Wow! Jack White blows the roof off the joint! Great energy. Wonderful stage presence. And he never misses a lick!
Let me tell you, that guy deserves the “Top 20 Guitarist of All-Time” label that Rolling Stone magazine put on him! Major, major talent!
