I have a job interview today for a position in Sri Lanka. While it’s not exactly hard to compete with Baghdad, I wonder if anyone has ever spent much time there and would care to fill me in. The position is in the southeast of the country.
My wife would be coming with me and we’d like to consider bringing our dog, is that a reasonable expectation? I’ve been in countries where people don’t really have house pets like dogs and it makes it difficult to own one. Is Sri Lanka dog friendly?
Oddly enough, the dog issue is the only question I can think of, but I’d like to hear from anyone who has spent time there about the life in general. Did you like it, hate it, or what? What did you think of the people? Anything I should know before I go?
It’s a phone interview tonight with someone in the US. Believe me, the civil war doesn’t phase me as long as they got a beach. Here in Baghdad, I have the sand and the civil war, but no beach.
I have never been there, but prior to their rather vicious civil war, lots of German friends of mine went there for vacations - it was a very popular destination for German tourists.
They all said it was beautiful and the people were very friendly (at least to the tourists.) Then there was that little problem of people being killed all over the place and tourism sort of dried up.
I suppose in comparison to Baghad, it might seem like paradise…but talk about out of the kettle, into the frying pan…
The conflict is mainly in the north of the island, but there are sometimes bombings in the capital and other parts of the country. I know people who have worked there, including one who lived and worked in the troubled north, and they still loved the country and spoke positively about the experience. Great food, too.
I think someone who posts here used to live there - I remember there was concern for his welfare at the time of the tsunami - False God?
I know someone from there and his brother and father still live there. (Or did when I met them a few years ago). I was dissapointed to find out that they did not know Arthur C Clarke personally, but the brother did mention that ACC did buy some sports equipment for the school he went to.
Sri Lanka was affected by the Tsunami, I dodn’t know how the recovery effors are going.
I’ve been to the island, but I haven’t been to Sri Lanka (it was Ceylon back in those days), and I once had a girlfriend who was born and grew up in Ceylon.
Thanks all for the info. The job is actually part of the Tsunami recovery. I’m waiting for the call which is overdue. Sometimes it’s hard to get a call through. Wish me luck.
I tried to email you, but you have it turned off. I have a friend who is a missionary in Freetown. She might respond if you email her. You can email me to get the address.
