Anyone know of good free software for splitting MKV files?

My Google fu is weak today and I don’t feel like sorting through mounds of crappy adware that promises to do everything possible with MKV files and then some. Also, searching for MKV splitter brings back lots of irrelevant results because the word “splitter” can also be used to describe the codec itself.

All I want is a nice simple utility that will take a large MKV file and allow me to split it without converting it. Something like AVI MPEG ASF WMV Splitter. Does anyone know of any software, preferably freeware, that will allow me to do this with minimal hassle? Thanks in advance.

The MKVToolnix package includes mkvmerge GUI which allows you to split MKV files by file size or duration (among other things). I believe that it fits your needs.

I prefer mkvcleaver for splitting mkv’s, but that’s mostly because it splits batches of files (rather than selecting and splitting each individual file). For putting them back together, I use the mkvmerge jkilez talked about.

While I am sure the OP has already resolved his issue, I will suggest yet another resource: AVI Demux. Despite its name, it is a muxer/encoder that also works with MKV files. Although not as automated as mkvmerge, it allows for a finer degree of accuracy when splitting or trimming files.
