I heard an arrangement of House of the Rising Sun on the radio once upon a time, in 1966 or 1967. I wonder if anyone knows this version, possibly including the artist or conductor or orchestra, or possibly even a You Tube link?
Here are the meager clues I know:
[ul][li] Heard on radio, 1966 or 1967. So, not a recent recording.[/li][li] Entirely instrumental version.[/li][li] Played entirely (or nearly so) on strings – violin and/or viola, with bass guitar accompaniment. (Possibly including some percussion, I’m not sure.)[/li][li] None of it was “electronic” sounding (like so many more recent recordings).[/li][li] Radio announcer announced it as “Casa Del Sol”, so it may have been published under that name. (There are many recordings titled “Casa Del Sol Nacimiente”, so it might be that?)[/li][li] I’m vaguely guessing that it was by one of the “Pops” orchestras of the era, e.g., perhaps Hugo Winterhalter or any one that that ilk.[/ul][/li]Does this jog anybody’s circuits? Anyone have a clue? I just spent an hour poking through the first 15 pages of a YouTube search, found lots of instrumentals, but not this one.
Nice try! But, barely recognizable as House of the Rising Sun. My Apple laptop can’t or won’t play it, but my vintage Win XP machine, running on a restored Zilog Z-80 clone, sort of did.
The version I remember was played entirely (or mostly) on bowed strings (violins/violas) with strong beat on bass. I found it highly … haunting. I got it recorded on a tape recorder, and I know exactly where that tape was last known to reside – 30-some years ago. (I gave it to a friend from college.) No idea if I that might still exist, and/or still be in playable shape, and/or be recoverable.
ETA: IIRC, it may have had some portion of the melody played on bass too.
