Anyone notice or think they've noticed anything weird during this heat wave?

I live in the South and I commute long distances for work. Anyone notice any odd things during this heat wave going on right now?

Birds I feel like I see so many birds I usually don’t see on the roads and stuff. I don’t know if there is an increased insect population due to warm temperatures or something for birds to feed on or if it’s some form of course confirmation bias, I’ve also seen a lot more bugs in general of species I haven’t seen that much in the last couple years like lightning bugs as I call them or fireflys. I’ve also noticed a lot more vultures around, I never used to see them that much.

Have you noticed anything weird during this heat wave, whether it’s completely random or imagined, something that has just piqued your radar so to speak?

Mr.Wrekker killed a snake inside his barn office. He has a small ac unit in the window. The snake was laying across the top of the unit. So animals looking for a cool spot can create odd circumstances.

The hummingbirds seem more aggressive than usual. Thirstier, too (or is that hungrier?).

the oddest thing is i live in one of the hottest parts of california and were having the mildest summer in 5 or more years

In fact we just had the coolest first day of summer ever …

We took our dogs out on the river in our pontoon boat. For all the heatwave talk, I was surprised. Yes, it was hot; it’s fucking summer, right? The way people have been talking, I expected my hair to spontaneously combust.

,and nuns are cursing openly on the street. (Dave Barry)

We seem to have fewer flying insects than normal. A couple years ago, our porch light would be swarming with moths; this year, hardly any at all.

Don’t know if its the heat, but I’ve been invaded by Wolf Spiders in the house. About as big as silver dollars and hairy. Scare the shit out of every time I see one. And then I kill them with extreme prejudice.

We’re not affected by the current heat wave. But last year, during a 105+ heat wave, I noticed that some hornets or yellowjackets were sheltering in our inset porch area on the northeast side of the house. They were huddled in a group, clinging upside down to the ceiling of the entryway. I had never seen any there before (or since), so I assume they were desperately trying to find a place that was a few degrees cooler so they could survive.

For the past couple of weeks, I’ve been getting up before dawn to do my weekend long run. Yesterday I encountered a group of about ten runners out for an organized run - at 5:30 in the morning.

But the extreme heat has mostly missed us. Temps have been in the high eighties, with heat indices in the high nineties, but it’s been like that for weeks; that’s just Georgia in July.

The opposite here. We’ve been battling a near plague level of houseflies. Flies have always been around of course, but never in these numbers. We’re eating inside like we used to do at picnics – covering food and waving constantly to keep them away. I’ve tried all the normal stuff, including flypaper. I catch lots of them, but the numbers don’t seem to change.

Maybe you should borrow some of Gatopescado’s spiders.

They are always aggressive. Out in the woods with four feeders, they were diving on each other to keep them away from the feeders. If they were a foot long, I would not go outside.

Yeah, super weird- It’s supposed to be a high of 89(!?!) tomorrow and Wednesday. Freakishly cool, considering that the traditional hottest part of the year is typically late July-through the middle of August, and highs are usually above 100 for that 2-3 week stretch.

July is on track for being the hottest month ever recorded. Sometimes it’s not just about what you’ve experienced.

I’ve been encountering more people on my early morning park walks. And the laundromat was crowded at 6:30 Saturday morning.

We have a sunny, low humidity day shaping up with a high in the upper 70s (normal is mid-eighties). The overnight low could dip into the 50s.

It’s climate change.

I hate you.

I cut the back lawn during the brunt of it… and I found myself coughing like crazy. It wasn’t dust (mostly wasn’t dust)… it was like the air itself didn’t have enough oxygen in it.

I’m re-reading that sentence and it sounds crazy. How could air not have enough oxygen? I mean, I went inside and I was fine. There wasn’t any funny smell to the air… it wasn’t as if there was some chemical leak.
It sounds ridiculous I know but I’m not lying. The air was hot, stale, and just… bad…?

Heat makes it difficult to control my crazy, so I’m noticing LOTS of things. So far I’m able to not force my crazy onto the innocent Dopers. But I can’t make any promises if it gets over 90 today.
