Anyone playing "Everquest?"

My son now has the above online game with his uncle, who is two states away. I bought all KINDS of crap for our PS2. Keyboard, network adapter, extra cable, and a subscription to the game.

Herein lies the problem:

THE LITTLE SNOT IS TAKING UP NOT ONLY MY TV BUT MY DSL LINE TOO!! The game is played on our TV via the PlayStation2. The network adapter is run through our DSL modem, which in turn connects him to the “online gaming room,” where he meets his uncle three times per week. This was necessary (the time limit), as my sister in law was starting to miss her husband, I was starting to miss you all, and my husband was going NUTS over the loss of his beloved 32" Toshiba. Sigh.

So. Anyone know how to run a splitter so I can have my DSL connection and my son can have his time with the large child that is my brother? Input, please, people!

I’ll ask my good friend, Paradygm Shift, to check in with some advice in the morning. He’s a big EQ fan and an IT specialist.

Get yourself a router to run between the DSL modem and the other machines in the house. They usually cost about $100 for a wired and $150 (for an expensive one) for a wireless.

The configuration is pretty easy, all you really need to do is plug the computers into the Router with an ethernet cable, then plug the router into a modem.

If you don’t want to run wires through your house you can pick up a wireless router (make sure it has wired ports too) and wireless card for the desktop PC then you can set everything up (as far as network hardware) near the PS2 and TV but keep the PC wherever you like.

As far as brands and Models go, d recommend the Linksys 4-Port Router/Wireless Access Point. I think the model number is BEFW11S4.

Hope this is of some help.

thanks. grumblegrumblegrumble…spoiled brat…

Just so you know, The PS2 game is called EverQuest Online Not at all like the real EverQuest, it’s played on different servers and is somewhat limited in features. I got all excited  thinking we had another EQ player on the boards, but alas it is only partially true. :frowning: At least he not tying up the computer too! I beta tested EQOA till my PS2 croaked, Its a great way to get em hooked on the game.

Oh and do like Meros said get a (Linksys)router…

Oops short one smilie :smack: (ah, that’s better)

I play EQ and now my fiance does too. We have a router, hey presto, no problems with access.

Don’t get a Lynksys router though, there are some compatibility iissues w/ EQ and Linksys of which they are aware. I can vouch for the problems – we went LD all the time, got the new, non-Linksys router and don’t go LD any more.

hmm… My friends all use Linksys (BEFSR41) routers and haven’t had any problems. One of them has 4 accounts running at the same time, I have an SMC Barricade (SMC7004ABR) with 2 accounts it works fine too!

What! No Smilies! :dubious:

I can’t speak for your experience or your friends’ experience. I can provide a link for your reading pleasure.

Certainly when we replaced our router (which was this one BTW), we pretty much eliminated our LD issues.

PlanetSide also has trouble with quite a few LinkSys routers. I don’t know what the deal with em is.

Interesting read that, I guess my friends got lucky or maybe they have an early version of the router firmware. I’d steer clear of the Linksys till it gets fixed. So Contrary, what are you using for a router?

I know I’ve never had any problems with EQ and my Linksys router…but then again the only version I have is the Mac Beta. I too am wondering what the deal is.

We got a D-Link, DI-604 4-port router. And as I said, we have not gone LD on it yet.

Meros, mebbe that is a different situation – I don’t know /shrug/ We play the good ol regular EQ (sorry I really don’t care for Macs, don’t boo or hiss please).

No booing or hissing from me, Contrary. We each have our preferences depending upon the job we need the computer to do.

To be honest, when it comes to gaming I usually prefer Windows over Mac its just that the opportunity to play EQ for free was too tempting to pass up.
