It’s the common man’s miniature game. I got addicted to it at DragonCon this year, and now I’m really hooked. I can easily see myself blowing $100+ on it.
Anyway, for those of you who don’t know, it’s a miniature game with very simple rules and a game system that’s much easier to follow than other games like Warhammer etc. Think of it as the fusion of Magic: The Gathering, and a miniature game. All the characters have their attributes on their bases, and there are no character sheets. Plus the models are mass-manufactured, much cheaper, and come pre-painted. Where you’d spend 15 bucks on one Warhammer model, you could get almost 10 MageKnight models for that.
I gave it a try when it first came out, but my geek dollar is already stretched to its limit, so I didn’t get hooked. My friends did, and they seem to enjoy it. I’ve never been very good at tactical games like that, though.
They are also coming out with a Battletech variant similar to MK, which looks neat, but again, I’ll probably have to pass.
I do think the figures look really nice and the game seems well done.
I’ve watched it being played at my local game shop but I have studiously avoided the minature based games because I have a small boy in the house just fascinated with the figs and I’d never have them all after he found them.
It looks fun, but I really, really need to curtail my gaming life and not getting into yet another one is a good start.
Mage Knight rules. I play whenever I get a chance. I’m partial to the Black Powder rebels.
The dial combat system is great, no tombs of information to comb through, no sheets of stats to memorize. Plus, the pre-painted figs make getting into battle very quick and easy. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in tabletop gaming.
Also, in addition to the Battletech game using the Mage Knight combat system, there will soon be a Marvel and DC comics version. Woo hoo!
