Anyone record from DirecTV to a set-top DVD recorder?

I have a Panasonic set-top DVD recorder, but I have Optimum cable. I’ve found that some (but not all) programs include copy protection that the DVD recorder will recognize (Macrovision I guess) so if you hit record with one playing the DVD recorder will stop and display COPYRIGHTED PROGRAM or something.

Anyway, I’m NOT looking for info to defeat this, but what I’d like to know is does DirecTV do this too? Specifically with their PPV movies, on a show by show basis (like Optimum), or with everything? Is anyone able to record a PPV movie off a DirecTV receiver onto a component (not built into a DirecTV box), set-top DVD recorder?

BUMP

Oh come on, nobody’s ever tried doing this?! The reason I’m asking is I have an extra DVD component recorder that I was going to give as a present to someone, but they have DirecTV and I want to know if it will be at all useful to them.

Sorry. All I can tell you is that it happens with Time Warner on some channels as well, so it’s likely all the cable providers do the same thing.

Why don’t you try asking where there are more people who might have tried this?

Ok thanks, I’ll check that site out. I just always found Dopers to be pretty savvy when it comes to this kind of stuff…

Yes, I have DirecTV and can record anything direct to DVD through component cables using my Magnavox MWR-10D6 DVD recorder with no problems. (Though I don’t have HD service, so dunno about that.)

Same here, using a (newer) regular vanilla Toshiba DVD recorder. We record HD programs all the time, although of course the recordings won’t be HD since the DVD recorder isn’t. We don’t get any of the premium movie channels (HBO, etc) but have recorded a couple of PPV films.
.

I can record protected programs from the U-Verse recorder to my Magnavox H2080MW8 hard drive, but cannot burn it to DVD.
