Anyone remember "Breakfast Sticks" (chocolate & straw-sized)?

I have a vague memory of something. I’m trying to find out what it really was.

I think:

  1. A breakfast food called “Breakfast Sticks”
  2. Chocolate in flavor
  3. The same size and shape as a drinking straw
  4. Wrapped in a semi-foil tube you peeled down
  5. Advertised as what the astronauts ate

I do! I do! They were kinda like a Tootsie Roll, but had a weird, caroby taste. We used to take them camping. I don’t remember the “Breakfast Sticks” part, but I do remember that they were “astronaut food.” I was a small child at the time (early 1970s) and I thought that was pretty cool.

Ditto: and the texture was crumbly and moist at the same time.

And there was the freeze-dried “ice cream” which tasted like vaguely strawberry/chocolate/vanilla flavored styrofoam, which was another “astronaut” food.

Fenris

I remember these, too, from when I was very small. Occasionally I wonder whether I had imagined them, because there seems to be no trace of them today. If I remember correctly, we called them “food sticks” or “chocolate sticks.” Does anyone know who made them?

My family always called them space sticks, damn I loved those things.

It was Space Food Sticks!!! And you can buy them!!! holy cow, will they be as good as I remember them?

There were other flavors besides chocolate, too. I distinctly remember peanut butter. They were made by Pillsbury.

I remember these from when I was small. I had vaguely remembered the term “food stick,” but I couldn’t find anyone who knew what I was talking about. I remember their having a larger diameter than a straw, though. Whatever happened to these? Does anyone know who made them?

Praise God. I thought I had imagined these. No one remembers them except me. Good ol’ Straight Dope.

We called 'em space food.

Good times.

I remember these!!! A whole box at a time!

YES!

I miss them.

I’m hesident to order from the website above because I’m afraid “limited quantities” means they found a 20 year old crate of these in some basement.

I would be very surprised if the shelf life of such products was less than 20 years. Go ahead and order them.

I’m the OP. THANKS GUYS! I just ordered some. Even if they taste like cardboard, it’s worth a few bucks just to have the experience.

SDMB comes through again!

Look right above your post. Pillsbury. Honest. And I’ll have you know that I remembered that without searching.

In fact, that site that’s selling the new ones has a history link, with a picture of the original packaging:

They’re going to bring back the peanut butter ones, too. The orange ones were nasty, though.
