Causing a disruption at an awards show, though technically it was post-show.
Late '90s, IIRC. Most likely the MTV awards. Post-show, a woman who had won an award was being interviewed. Outdoors, like on a balcony. If in L.A., probably the balconies outside the Kodak Theater, or perhaps it was somewhere in NYC. Anyway, the award winner and the interviewer (also a woman, again IIRC) were on opposite sides of a table, where the statuette was sitting. And while they were conversing, Courtney Love staggered up, literally staggered – she was clearly either drunk or tripping on something – picked up the statuette and either started fondling it or acting like she was gonna walk off with it.
The interviewer reacted like, “Ha ha…nooooooo, Courtney, we don’t do that…Give it back, c’mon…” and gently eased it out of her hands, as one does with a toddler, which was how CL was acting, after all. Then someone, maybe an usher, maybe straight-up security, escorted her somewhere else, and the interview went on.
I swear this happened. I didn’t see it live, but I did see it. Probably on an E! program, which I still watched in those days, or perhaps it was rerun on MTV or VH-1. It was late '90s or beyond, though; I’m sure Kurt was long gone by that time, as in, too late for CL to be given a pass on grounds of crazy-with-grief. Sound familiar to anyone?
