Anyone remember Naturistics Sea Splash cologne? What WAS that smell?

Late 80s into the 90s there was a rash of sea-related scents available. Sea Splash is the one I remember best, but Avon also had Soothing Seas, and I can remember also owning assorted no-name sea-scented candles and bath salts.

What were those fragrance notes called? It was a really fresh, sharp scent, and I’ve not come across it since. (Both Suave and Avon have some sort of ocean scent, but it’s much more generic and just not the same.)

METHOD brand hand soaps have a lot of different ‘water’ scents. Try those, just go sniffing around at the stores. I too love the “sea” scented stuff, it smells relaxing lol. Those hand soaps are the best i’ve come across. Let me check my sinks…yeah, “Waterfall” and “Sea Minerals” by Method foaming hand soap. They carry them at Target and Marianos, Publix and Meijer. Should be able to find them there. Sorry can’t be more of help, I was born in 88.

Believe it or not, there are lots of dedicated “fragrance” forums out there. A place called BaseNotes.net even has a board dedicated to vintage perfumes. They might be worth a try.

Not too darn bad - everything I needed to know about Hai. Karate. (but was afraid to ask)

Yeah, I should have mentioned in the OP that I had tried searching some of the fragrance sites. All I could find were vague references to sea salt or sea mist, which reminds me of perfumers who describe their scent as having “base notes of white roses”, as though white roses have a specific smell.

I’m just trying to figure out what fragrance notes create that distinctive scent.

Calone is what’s used for sea-scent in those 80s perfumes.

Thank you for this! The Wikipedia page for Calone provides the name methylbenzodioxepinone, and that let me find this article by Matvey Yudov which discusses Calone and other chemicals that produce “aquatic” notes in perfumery.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! It looks like this may have been related to the cucumber-melon phase that followed (of which I was also a fan).

I have been searching for

I have been searching for Seaspray for years.
Anyone have any ideas for something similar?

Focus 21 had a product called Sea Plasma, marketed as a hair and skin moisturizer…not sure if it’s the same fragrance. Since they stopped making it people are charging outrageous prices for a bottle. (Hmm…I have a bottle in the cupboard, maybe I should put it up for sale!)

So what we humans recognize as a ‘seashore fragrance’ is actually brown algae farts? Eeeew!

If that squicks you out, you may not want to know that a lot of perfumes containsperm whale vomit.
