I just bought the soundtrack. It’s really funny. Anyone seen it? Does it have a plot? Do you recommend it?
No seriously. It’s a musical about puppets, living in New York, dealing with the trials and tribulations of life. No one?
I would definitely recommend it. The plot is rather thin. It’s about the trials and tribulations of a group of 20something NYCers. However, the songs are really good, the puppets are good, and the puppeters are absolutely amazing. They are on stage working the puppets and also imitating the puppet’s moments exactly. It’s totally unique, and a hoot.
The few songs i have heard such as “The internet is for porn” and “everyone is a little racist” were nothing special musically, but they were clever and entertaining. Based on the videos and such i have seen combined with word of mouth…i imagine that’s what the show is without breaking any real new ground. I’d sure go if i was invited.
The bf and I saw it last month in NYC, and we loved it (actually, I loved, he liked it somewhat). No, it’s not in any way innovative or musically challenging, but if you want groundbreaking musical drama, Sondheim’s Assassins is playing up the street.
The lead character is Princeton, a recent college grad (with a BA in English) who has moved to the farflung outer realms of Alphabet City on Avenue Q (a cute play on both the below 14th St. Avenue A, Avenue B and so on plus Sesame Street, adding a gay vibe with the Q). He falls in love with Kate Monster (kinda like a furrier version of Prairie Dawn on Sesame Street), who is an assistant kindergarten teacher. If you’ve listened to the soundtrack, you pretty much get the gist of what happens in the play. It has some marvelous visual effects, particuarly during the song, “Fantasies Come True.”
All in all, I thought it was a terrific night out, although be warned that Broadway ain’t cheap.
Oh, and may I add that I am madly in lust with John Tartaglia, the openly gay puppeteer who performs Princeton and Rod, the closeted gay Republican. Not only does he have a terrific voice, but he also knows how to fill out a pair of jeans!
We saw it a month or so ago. Winningly cute. Definitely Sesame Street for adults, for sure. Sesame Street with an edge or two yet with all the wholesome warmth of the PBS kiddie show.
And really really well done.
:ding ding ding ding ding: “Five nightstands…”
:ding ding ding ding: “…one nightstand!”
I was thinking about the street with that name in the Antelope Valley in Southern California.
It’s not much to see.
