In concert that is… any comments?
Bumping because I need to make plans soon.
Not lately, but I did see them about 15 years ago in separate concerts.
Afraid I can’t help you , but I did read an interesting article about Tommy James in Goldmine last month. He talked about how when “Hanky Panky” was a regional hit, all the major labels wanted to sign him up and release the song nationally. The mob-connected Roulette label also wanted him, and consequently, all the offers from the majors were mysteriously retracted! James credits going with Roulette for the longevity of his career, as they kept promoting him, while the major labels would probably have dropped him not long after “Hanky Panky” ran its course.
Last time I heard the Grass Roots (and it was years ago) they had a distinctly Vegas style to their arrangements. In fairness, it was a long time ago and they may have gone back to the original style.
I saw the Grass Roots last January at the Radisson (formerly Holiday Star Theatre) in Merrillville, Indiana. They were with Mickey Dolenz and the Buckinghams. They really rocked the house. The lead singer was just getting over a cold, but he still sounded pretty good. They sang a whole lot more songs than I remembered them having, and it was really fun. I recommend you see them if the opportunity is still there.
Is Creed Bratton touring with the Grass Roots?
Ha! He wasn’t with them when I saw them.
Apparently there is talk of a movie and Martin Scorcese is interested … at least that’s what the newspaper article promoting the show said.
Concert report …
The Grass Roots did sound like a lounge act but still worthwhile depending on the situation.
TJ and the S were excellent. The band was great and sounded current without taking away from the original recordings. TJ does need to do something about his hair though. Not to be missed if you are a fan.
