Creed Bratton: Grass Roots. A rock star? The Office.

How big was the Grass Roots in the 1960’s? How popular were they? The question is about Creed Braton, was he a rock star in the 1960’s? I have seen a video for “Live for Today” and seen creed was a guitar player in the band. Uncle Creed looked the same except that he was in his 20’s.

I wish the show would give Creed more lines because he is like more of our befuddled fathers. I wish the show would showcase his musical talents.

Do the Grass Roots ever rejoin for a concert? The question is that in 1967 America was Creed a known personality in the band? I wasn’t born when they were around so how famous were they?

The Grass Roots were fairly popular, although by no means superstars. I know Creed by name, but most people wouldn’t. There was no “front man” for the band that everybody knew.

There was an article about him in Vintage Guitar magazine within the last couple months.

The Grass Roots had 13 singles that hit the top 40, a pretty solid record. Their most successful was “Midnight Confession” which made it to number 5. Most of their songs did not make the top twenty, however.

They had two gold albums, with six in the hot 100.

Respectable, but no one considered them among the top rock acts at the time.

There was an outtake on the NBC website from the Booze Cruise episode a few seasons back that showed Creed playing. He stepped in with the band and shredded.

It was much, much harder to know much about people in bands in those days. There was no rock press, the mainstream magazines and newspapers seldom covered rock at all, except possibly for a handful of groups, and the fan press didn’t yet exist outside The Beatles. One or two hip publications covered rock, but they had tiny circulations and the Grass Roots didn’t remotely qualify as hip.

You might hear a name on the radio, though that was extremely rare in my experience.

About the only way would be to get a record album and hope that the liner notes said something about the band. But even by 1967, it was still rare to have much of anything on the back of albums except ads for other albums.

I liked the Grass Roots as a middling radio hit band and I never learned the name of a single member of the group. I never bought any of their albums, though. My guess is that Creed would have been virtually unknown except to the most fervent fans.

I remember The Grass Roots, but I didn’t know Creed’s name.

Rob Grill’s wife was my French teacher in 10th grade.

Yes, you can touch me.

I recall the Grass Roots and a few of their hits from the sixties. Well-enough known, but not one of the top acts. I certainly wouldn’t have known anything about any of the members. I hadn’t been aware of Creed’s history with the group before this thread.

Creed is probably my favorite character from The Office - the guy with a past you would never suspect from his appearance. I love his matter-of-fact reminiscences about the most outrageous activities.

Will we ever know what he did with the real Cred?

I used to listen to a lot of classic rock/light listening radio in the late 80’s early 90’s, hours and hours at a time, and I became really familiar with most of the Grass Roots’s hits… you were almost sure to find one of their chartmakers rolled into the playlist every hour or two. I like their music a lot, but had no idea Creed was really their lead guitarist… it’s absolutely great and gives his character a lot more depth and direction now that I know.

Some of my favorites:

Two Divided by Love
Sooner or Later
Let’s (shalalala) live for today
Midnight Confessions
Temptation Eyes
Wait a million years

Thank you so much for these links. I was born in 66 but these songs are so familiar!

Creed has always been my favorite character on the show and this just makes it so much better.

I’d even go so far as to say that Creed is perhaps one of the top 50 most influential rock guitarists of the 60’s.

Sure, but the list only goes to #37.

I saw The Grass Roots play an oldies festival in my hometown back in the early to mid 90’s. They were a lot of fun but I reall don’t know how many of the original band members were there, including Creed.

Love to get an exclusive, The Office, Grill’s Gibson. Or a Bratto Strato.
