Anyone still use a PDA? Which kind?

Still a big PDA fan and collector. Let’s see…

Use my tungstens, a W and a C, for an awful lot… writing and keeping track of my works in progress in docsToGo, keeping notes during meetings on the memo pad, rating and tracking my tunes on the bus, playing games, reading ebooks.

Also have a few others that are used more rarely or for more specialized things - an old sharp organizer that is good for writing in, a palm m130 that’s a light and portable ebook reader, and an HP ipaq that’s pretty much in permanent use as an audible book-on-flash player.

And my alphasmart dana, which I suppose isn’t really a PDA though it has a lot in common with them.

I still have my Treo 650 sitting in a drawer, after two years of solid service.
Before that, I used a Palm m505, and I started in 1999 with a Palm V.

I have a transparent model with a Symbol bar code scanner built in. It’s a salesman’s demo, for showing off the guts, and no one else has one like it .

IMHO, the Palm V was the best. It looked great and did everything it was supposed to do instantly. It had probably the best monochrome screen at the time. Each model after that started slipping :frowning:

I switched to an iPhone last month, and I love it!

However, it lacks some things that the Treo has. One I can’t do without is my SplashID password safe. That’s why I still have the Treo charged and ready, so I can get passwords when I need them.

The “iCal lite” calendar program on the iPhone isn’t anywhere close to Datebk6, my preferred app.

My iPhone doesn’t sync with my corporate email and scheduling app — my Treo did.

But… I’m in love with the iPhone UI, I feel that switching from Treo to the iPhone is like comparing Windows 3.1 to one of the modern OS’s. It’s so smooth.

I have a Palm Tungsten E2. I rather like it. I’ve had a Palm continuously since the m505 was new, which was in 2002 or so, I believe.

Kinda depends on your definnition of “PDA”.

I have both a Treo 700w http://www.palm.com/us/products/smartphones/treo700w/ & an AT&T Tilt http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service/cell-phone-details/?device=AT%26T+Tilt™&q_sku=sku1060009

Are those "PDA"s?

They have a keyboard, Windows Mobile, and Mobile Office. They have lots of non-volatile storage. They have email. And bluetooth & WiFi & dellular data. Oh by the way, they have phone software too, so they can send/receive both calls & text messages.

So they sure have all the functionality of the original PDAs, plus a whole lot more.

To my definition I have 2 PDAs.

Hope this is an acceptable bump, but I actually just got a used Palm Vx from a friend. Works like a charm, and is in like-new condition.

I am hoping to use it to read e-books, but am having problems finding a free e-book reader. I got some books (baen online library has free ebooks… yay!) but haven’t been able to find a dang reader. Suggestions?

I like see spot run

I use Mobipocket reader: http://www.mobipocket.com/en/DownloadSoft/default.asp?Language=EN

I still have my 4+ year-old T|E, though I use it much less than I used to since having reverted to fixed-time salary status from hour-billing freelance status cut down on my need to independently keep track of activity and expenses. It’s still useful as a pocket organizer though it’s very clearly nearing end of useful life (battery life shortened). As it is, I also have an older and very basic cell phone, so I’m just waiting to see if Palm and ATT (or T-Mob) will come up this year with a version of the Centro for GSM networks – otherwise I’ll go for a Treo – just so so I can replace both with a smartphone and *NOT * join the dagblasted Blackberry cult that’s taking over people all over my immediate surroundings.

I’ve written some VB programs that we use in our warehouse for taking inventory. They’re Pocket PC. I also wrote a program to keep baseball statistics. It keeps me occupied at my son’s ballgames.

Since I got my iPhone, I haven’t used my Palm TX.

My Plam T|X is possibly the most important piece of electronics I own. I can lose my phone and only be inconvenienced, losing my PDA would be a major blow. I basicly use it as a diary. As many events as possible get recorded, and of course as many details on the people I meet. Combined I can almost always reconstruct any meeting I have had. Priceless to me.

Isn’t that a nice device? Like I said above, they really hit their peak with the Palm V and its brethren. After that, it was all downhill, with a brief resuscitation when they got the Treo line from Handspring.

Even though it is quite limited by today’s standards (8MB, B&W, Serial port sync), it still looks pretty darned good and the productivity apps are as fast and snappy as they always were. Hope it works out for you!

So far, so good. I loaded Cspotrun, and I am liking it, but am annoyed with one factor.

Maybe you fine folks can help me out…

When I open my ebook (1632, by Eric Flint for those wondering) I see a bunch of what looks like HTML markup. I haven’t found a way yet to get rid of that… suggestions?

Yeah, it can’t deal with some files. I rebuild them from text or doc files with an app I can’t find at midnight and all is well. Did you buy the ebook? I’ll get back to you when I’m awake.

Wow, I didn’t know that Palms were already dinosaurs!

I have a Palm Zire 72? (the words rubbed off and I don’t remember anymore). But I use it absolutely every day. I listen to audiobooks that I download on it and I use it as my GPS when I go places further than a few miles. And it has all my contacts on it, but I only use it for that occasionally.

No, it and a host of others from this and other authors are available at Baen’s website, for free.

I will be waiting with bated breath!

Then you want Bram Stoker.

I abused two Zire 21s unto an early grave, and am now taking much better care of my Z22.
I read books on it (remind self to check what’s new on Baen’s site, haven’t looked there in a year) than I download from the NYPL. The memos are indispensible… as is the calendar and address book.

And I’ve got pictures on it too!

I use a Palm Z whatever. It’s about 3 years old.

If I had a lifestyle that required a cell phone I’d get a smart-phone so that I’d only be managing one device. For now, though the PDA meets my needs.

I use all the core features: contacts, task list, calendar more than anything else. When I’m travelling I play games or read on it, but that’s infrequent.

I’ve been using Palm Pilot’s since I bought a Palm III, right now I’m using a Treo 650. It’s getting a bit long in the tooth and Palm has screwed the pooch in upgrading the OS. They developed 2 or 3 new ones internally and tossed them before shipping.

Sometime over the next year I’m going to upgrade it, but it will have to be to one that has a decent SDK so that I can bring it up to comparable functionality of my Treo. It doesn’t make any sense for me to switch if the new phone doesn’t do everything my Treo does coughiPhonecough.

I’ve looked at the HTC Tilt, nice phone easy to develop for, I’ll reconsider the iPhone when they release the dev kit, and I’m waiting to see what phones come out running Google Android.
