I have a Sony Clie but the only thing I use it for these days is as an alarm clock. I like the fact I can set it to wake me at 6:30 on MWF and 5:30 on TTh. Otherwise I am using my iPod Touch for everything else I used my PDA for. I could probably use my Touch for alarm clock features too, but that would make my PDA worthless to me and I’d need to sell it, and that makes me sad. Who’d buy an almost 4 year old PDA?
There was a point in my life – 4-5 years ago – where I was suddenly balancing work, grad school, volunteer activities, personal/social activities, and starting a Toastmasters club. I had used DayRunners since graduating from college, but at that point I realized that I wanted/needed something more portable with a more robust calendaring and organization capability. And, you know, shiny new toys are good things. I got a Palm Tungsten T3, and used it happily until last year when I replaced it with a Palm Tungsten T|X.
I love the T|X, with its big screen and especially its wifi capability. I like the Palm OS, and happily run Bejeweled and SplashShopper (which I think is worth its price). All of that said, 2 weeks ago I decided to switch from my perfectly good “regular” cell phone to a BlackBerry. I desperately wanted a QWERTY keyboard (my SO and I exchange a lot of text messages), and from there it wasn’t much of a leap to decide that I wanted a smartphone. So I got an 8830 World Edition.
At first I thought I’d definitely be keeping the T|X, for the wifi if nothing else, but I find that I can do everything I want to on my BlackBerry – and I’m paying for an email/web plan, so I may as well use it. It’s definitely more convenient to just carry one device around. SplashShopper is a little more complicated on the BlackBerry, because of having to use the click wheel instead of just tapping the screen, but I’m trying to get used to it. The only thing I don’t have duplicated yet is Bejeweled, because it isn’t available for the BlackBerry OS (though similar games are), but instead I am somewhat addicted to BrickBreaker – the BlackBerry version of the old Atari game Breakout.
I miss the Palm OS’s calendar interface, with the color coding (the BlackBerry has a color screen, so I don’t understand why the calendar is still b&w). And sometimes I miss viewing things on the T|X’s large screen. But other than that, I now find myself wondering if I should sell the T|X. First I would want to call my wireless provider and verify that my email/web plan is, as I believe, unlimited. If that’s the case, I might not need the T|X’s wifi anymore (it’s easier to get a cell signal than a free wifi signal). But I’ve had a Palm of one kind or another for several years now, and I don’t think I’ll be ready to give it up very soon.
I recently sold my almost-4-year-old T3 on eBay. I set the opening bid at $50 (even though I thought it was still worth at least $100), and that’s pretty much what I got for it.
I might; I’m getting sick of carrying my black bag everywhere so I can have all the numbers I need. And my work cell phone is a piece of junk. I just hadn’t thought of looking into a PDA until I saw this thread and I wouldn’t want to invest the money for a brand new one until I knew if it would be more of a help than a hassle.
Makedocw -YMMV, I just notice my copy is from 1997-creates PRC files from TXT. I can read HTML with Word, and save it as a text file. For example, I download pulp HTML from Munsey and create PRC for my Palm.
Thanks for that link, carnivorousplant; I’ve been needing something like that for a good while. In fact, the fact that I’m now aware of makedocw’s existence will probably make me start toting my Palm around again. Project Gutenberg wherever I want? Hells yeah!
Good point. That may be where I got The Voyage of the Beagle and/or Three Men in a Boat.
Now I can use my Palm for something other than a cellphone backup and porn viewer!
I have been using Palm devices since 1998 when I got a Palm III. I have been using a palm device ever since. I currently have a Palm TX and it is awesome. I keep my schedules on it, contacts, it wakes me up in the morning, keeps me entertained with games, lets me browse the web quickly over wifi, and even keeps track of my wifes cycles.
I’d be lost without it.
I’ll have to dl that and take a look. While I am loving having 4-5 books in the palm of my hand, the markup is a REALLY big distraction.
