Petfinder.com, a database of homeless animals, has developed a cult following among the soft of heart.

Sounds like some dude trying to steal the hearts of single women on Match.com, doesn’t it? Actually, Patch is an American Staffordshire terrier-mix, and the description is from his profile on Petfinder.com, an online database that matches homeless pets with potential companions.

Patch and more than 160,000 other pets lure 5 million pet lovers to Petfinder every month. For many browsers it’s addictive—the site says people stay an average of 20 minutes, longer than on Amazon, according to Nielsen NetRatings. Mary Hill and her boyfriend Matthew Conley first hit Petfinder 18 months ago, shortly after Alex, Matthew’s 13-year-old mini-schnauzer, had to be put to sleep. Hill, a 24-year-old visual-effects artist in Savannah, Ga., has been a Petfinder buff ever since—even after the couple adopted two mini-schnauzers, Zoe and Fritz, through the site. She visits the site a couple of times a day and says that she and Matt sometimes find themselves in different rooms in their apartment, instant-messaging each other links to pets.

I was actually on Petfinder this morning and visit it every couple of days. But I am also in the market to adopt and dog and a cat or possibly two.
