Has anyone here ever visited the falkland islands, South Georgia, or Tristan Da Cunha? It seems that well heeled travellers can go anywhere today-witbness the sinking of the cruise ship in the South Atlantic. My question: what is there to do at these places? And, what are the accomodations like in a town like Stanley?
Is the food good?
Just curious!
Doper **SurrenderDorothy ** was born on St. Helena IIRC.
casdave was there in 1982.
I used to live on Ascension Island. There’s been talk about tourism over the years, but as far as I know, it hasn’t produced any concrete results. When I lived there, you had to have a job with one of the resident organizations in order to get a visa.
The scenery and wildlife is quite interesting. The fishing is great. The nightlife is rather limited.
Brooklyn school teacher: Has anyone here ever visited the falkland islands?
Student: Which fuckin’ islands you talking about?
going to those islands is the #1 dream of my life!
I was wondering about what life in the Falklans would be like-it must be a pretty laid-back place, and with only 3000 people, you get to know your neighbors…still-10,000 miles away from the mother country…I wonder if the people there fell isolated.
Do many people emigrate to the Falkland Islads?
Outposts: Journeys to the Surviving Relics of the British Empire By Simon Winchester was a fascinating read, and will tell you everything you’d ever want to know about the topic.
Not as a tourist though, wasn’t he a member of the Royal Navy at the time?
I’ve read recently that the Falklands are undergoing a boom at the minute and has had significant immigration.
