I could not believe it. I do hope someone else watched this…
It was on Animal Planet- Animal Cops(I think). Filmed in Detroit. The animal cops worked for the Michigan Humane Society.
Disgusting house. 247 cats in a small brick bungalow!!! Looked like it was on Detroits East Side. It was totally unbelievable. The MHS had to make 3 trips (with face masks and boots, gloves, etc.) to get all of the cats out. All of this took place in 90 degree (Farenheit) heat.
There was feces all over the floor. Don’t even ask me about the basement. The sewer was backed up and these poor creatures were sick and covered in filth.
The man who owned the house moved into his garage while the MHS removed the cats. I believe the man said (as to why he had so many cats), “Well, it started as one stray and she was pregnant…” UGH!!!:smack:
This totally amazes me how someone could live in this kind of filth.
Obviously the man was mentally ill. It is so sad.
All of the cats had to be put to sleep because they were diseased and feral.
Disgusting. Poor animals. Sick man. Ugh.
I know this probably goes on everywhere. I just cannot fathom living in that kind of filth.
For a while there, it seemed like there was a “crazy cat lady” story in the news at least once every other week. Typically, a well-meaning spinster who just couldn’t understand “why all the fuss and hullaballoo” over her dear little pets.
Nice to see the guys getting a piece of that mucho pussy action.
My son has a friend who just let the pregnant kitties pile up. He said he would be sitting there and a mommy cat would walk by with a kitten hanging out of her (ahem!) hoo-hoo. The house was a shit-hole and there were just cats and cats and cats and cats. I think they had over 30 at one time. Now I’m a big fan of cats (got four of the little softies, myself!) but enough is enough. I don’t even see how a person could enjoy them with that many around. And what do you feed them? And let’s not even go into the smell! Ewwwww! Cat turds everywhere!
I agree. I have two and am constantly cleaning, sweeping, vacuuming. But the rewards are wonderful!
Anyway,
Apparently the man said he spent 3-4K per month just feeding the kitties. **I think not------b/c I can’t see how someone who looked like that (they disguised his voice and face) and lived in that filth could hold a job that would pay him that much money…per month, let alone, to feed just the cats. Ugh.
Just my opinion.
Where and when does it go all wrong for these crazy cat people?!?!
That happened in my hometown. The woman who did this was obviously insane. She lived in San Francisco, but bought a seperate house for her cats in Petaluma (45 minute drive in average traffic), and she would drive up every day to feed them. Houses in the Bay Area = NOT CHEAP, but who cares when you have to find a place to put your hundreds of cats?
It was discovered when someone broke a window and the smell began to upset the neighbors. Some of the cats had cannibalized each other. Shockingly, this was the second time she’d done this - a few years previous, she’d bought a house and filled it with cats in neighboring Novato.
I don’t know what on earth drives people to do stuff like this.
My father is a veterinarian and a few of his clients are some of those cat people. We once got a carrot cake from a lady who owned a few dozen cats. There was as much cat hair as carrot in it.
Cat hair and cake don’t mix. Cat hair and carrot don’t mix. Cat hair and human digestive system don’t mix.
That was one disturbing house. I’ve never seen anything like that, and hope I never do again. Not only was there feces on the floor, but a layer (or more) of it was on every single surface in the house. The ammonia from the urine alone made the rescuers’ eyes water and their skin burn. Holy shit!
Especially sad that those animals were forced to live there and then were removed only to be killed. One of the workers summed it up very well saying (something to the effect of), “It’s just heartbreaking because these cats have never had any cat joys: they’ve never been outside, they’ve never even had fresh air to breathe, or clean food or a clean blanket to sleep on. That’s all cats want. They want to breathe clean air on sit on your lap and purr. And none of these cats will ever have that. They’ve lived their whole lives in this horrible place, which just got invaded by monsters in masks who grab them with these metal claws and take them off to be destroyed. It breaks your heart.”
Did they get all the cats in the end? It sounded like they might have had to set live traps after the second day.
I know…I feel so bad for those innocent creatures. It just goes to show you that everyone should spay and neuter their pets!
(I don’t mean to preach, but it’s so true.) At least the kitties are out of their misery and are now in (per the other thread) Hello Kitty Heaven. Poor little souls.
I think they must have caught all the cats (with the live traps). I think they were adamant about getting all of them.
I wonder what happens to a house like that? It must have been condemned or something. I mean I can’t imagine trying or attempting to clean all that crap (literally) up. So sad.
There was a case in Edmonton about a year ago of a case just like this. The neighbours called the police because of the smell, the police investigated and called animal control
The woman actually had the gall to complain that she didn’t know why they were taking her pets. - When animal control arrived, on of her “pets” walked up to the man and droped dead right in front of him!
Good lord people. What the heck is wrong with having 2 cats?!?!?1
Siemsi, my girlfriend calls me last night at 10:20 PM, I was thinking “what the heck Kristen?!” ; she yells into the phone “Put Animal Planet on!!!”
I could not believe it, I did not watch it all (Animal Planet is not too much of hubby’s taste!) when I watch they were estimating 200. I can’t believe there was really 247 cats!!! This is nuts.
When I was at the pound to see if my dog had turned up (she hadn’t) I overheard a woman there talking about the cat she had that birthed 3 litters a year?!?!? She wanted to get her spaded [sic] but the cat was pregnant again, so she couldn’t do it just yet.
I caught that show last night, and it turned my stomach. I knew what the outcome would be, but when the one officer finally voiced the words, I actually cried. What a waste of life, when it could have easily been prevented.
We got three of our five cats from a woman who runs a kitty foster home called the Tiger Ranch. It’s a horse farm, and she takes in animals-she even has a peacock! But mostly cats.
However, she gets all the cats fixed. All of them. And she finds homes for them.
While she has about say, 75 cats at one time, she has quite a few acres of property, volunteers, she has deals with vets to get the animals fixed. She has three dogs-big ones mostly to help with security issues. It’s like kitty paradise-she has her own cats, and then she has a special room for any sick animals, for kittens, one for cats to be adopted, etc. They have leads and play yards and everything.
And she accepts donations and the like. It’s NOT a crazy cat lady-she really REALLY takes care of these animals. Even though they’re outdoors-it’s a farm. They all have all their shots, everything.
She’s also very wary about who she adopts to. She gets very angry with people who don’t get their animals fixed.
God. I was all set to rant on what I’ve spent my day doing: dealing with the outcome of this puppy mill case. Fortunately, we’re having a happy ending (for most of the animals): people started lining up two hours before we opened for adoptions, and by the time we opened, nearly 100 people were outside waiting for the chance to see these dogs, to see if they wanted to adopt any of them. It was phenomenal, unprecedented.
Folks, you think buying a purebred is a good idea? Think long and hard before you do so. Make sure you’re qualified to judge a kennel’s treatment of its animals: this kennel seemed to excel at hiding its bad conditions from clients and inspectors. Be sure that they’re providing medical care to their animals, that their animals are properly socialized, that they’re willing to take back any animals that don’t work out. AKC certification counts for almost nothing: although the AKC technically requires minimal standards for care amongst certified breeders, the reality is that almost no kennels ever have their certs revoked by the AKC for inhumane animal conditions.
Better than buying a purebred, come check out your shelter, or your local breed rescue organization. We’ve got literally millions of dogs every year looking for homes. www.petfinder.org has a magnificent list of animals from shelters and breed placement groups across the country.
As for the 247 cats? Jesus Christ. Hoarders are definitely insane, but they’re terrible to deal with: they genuinely don’t understand how they’re mistreating the animals on their property, no matter how horrific the conditions are. If you think you know a hoarder, a “crazy cat lady,” don’t treat it as a joke: document it, and let your local animal control know.
