Has anyone here got any tips or advice on interesting things to see in Nuremberg?
Any local specialties I need to try? Beers unique to the area?
I am only planning on staying a couple of days (I am actually going down for a Neil Young concert in Munich, but flying in and out of Nuremberg) but I am interested in history, although I am not sure about visiting the various Nazi historical sites. (seen more than my fair share of similar places around Europe, and this is a trip to unwind)
And I’m not quite sure why it’s in Nürnberg, but what seems to be the major German Transport Museum is there. All indoors; no rolling stock in outdoor yards. The 1/10 scale models of all the various train carriages are fascinating even if you’re not a railfan.
I’ve been many times and love it. As mentioned, the Old Town in the walls is wonderful and filled with many great restaurants, shops, etc.
The National Museum has the best classical music instruments collection I’ve ever seen, weird-ass mutant 30-string mandolins that take six arms to play, that sort of thing. Great medieval arms and armor.
The castle is a fun walk with a good little museum with more old arms and armor.
There’s a little pocketwatch museum that also has some other old time devices like astrolabes and stuff.
The food market in the old town plaza has great local beer and gingerbread stands. Gluwein stands during the Xmas weeks so you can get soused while you shop.
The Nürnberger Christkindlesmarkt runs from November 29 through December 24, 2019.
The first time I went there was back when I was about 7 years old. We had just moved to Germany from Texas, and I didn’t have a proper winter coat yet, nor was I acclimated to the cold. I remember being colder than I ever had been in my life, and my parents were afraid I was getting hypothermia, so they gave me Glühwein (mulled wine) to warm me up. :dubious:
Years later I bought a brand-new new BMW 325is in Fürth, which is right next to Nürnberg/Nuremberg.
I’ve never been to Nuremberg, but I know that the region of Franconia has the biggest breweries per capita ratio in Germany, maybe in the world, and is famous for its beer. So no need to worry about beer. The other famous culinary specialty is Nürnberger Bratwurst.
