Anyone with Owens-Corning basements?

Four hours with a salesman talking about this product and it does look like an awesome product for sure. They use basically compressed insulation for the walls and the whole ‘system’ seems to be great for keeping a basement free of mold, the stuff is easy to clean as well as maintain. The downsides are that it only comes in one ‘color’ and hanging stuff from it will be tricky.

I can go into more details, but what I was looking for is anyone who has the product or shopped for it and whether you like what you have.

The one big negative was the total car salesman approach to the pricing. What started at $41000 base price turned into $33000 by night’s end with a chance ‘pending manager approval’ of going to $30k ($48/sq ft). My other question is then of course for those who have it or are looking at it or have looked at it, were you able to get it any cheaper? I’ve seen one site online that was $28/sq ft, but that was before petroleum shot up plus Katrina hitting plus it was about 18 months ago, but that still seems far off from what our lowest quote was.

Does anyone have any feedback with the product?

I only have experience with the “total car salesman” aspect that you identified. The first sleazoid thing the salesman did was insist that my husband and I had to both be there for the sales pitch. (I believe the tactic is, if resistance is encountered, try to play “Fearmonger Shop” with the wife by talking up the dangers of black mold.)

When we told him if he insisted I be there, we’d just cancel the appointment. He agreed to come anyway and did the same nonsense with the price.

Eventually the salesman finally conceded the product was really designed for new construction where the houses have unfinished basements. (Our house was built in 1937 and has glazed brick walls.)

If you feel this is overpriced and you are willing to walk away from it if the price isn’t right, then make them a counter offer. I’d bet that next week or between Christmas and New Year’s would be great times to do that. They probably have monthly, quarterly and/or yearly budgets to meet, and if they are short, a reasonable offer might be considered.

Your experience sounds like one we had from a siding salesman. “Usually, we charge $xx,xxx. But if you sign a contract today, we can get you $yy,yyy. Once I walk out the door, that lower price isn’t valid any more.” He walked out the door empty handed, but they were calling us soon after to tell us, that just for us, they would extend the lower offer. Bah. There isn’t any “pending manager approval” for the $30k cost. Anyone and everyone with a good credit check is being offered that, I bet, and they are making a very good markup with that resale. They just want you to think they are offering you a special deal.
