Haven’t done gaming in years but wondering what’s out there. I was OK at Doom but all the modern FPS games seem to be totally unplayable by the inexperienced. My favorite games though were the spooky, atmospheric type, usually involving puzzle solving or thinking rather than quick reflexes. I like spooky horror movies, but more on a deep psychological level rather than a bunch of gore and jump scenes.
You could go to Steam and check stuff based on the tags - like Horror + Atmospheric + Single Player, that should narrow it down some. Something like Year Walk could maybe interest you? Or Lifeless Planet … or Lone Survivor? There’s so many games coming out nowadays that unless your tastes are really narrow and esoteric there should be at least something for you.
At least some of the kind of games you’re talking about may be categorized as “casual games” or “adventure games” nowadays. You might want to browse the horror- or atmospheric-looking games at a site like http://www.bigfishgames.com/.
Or, I noticed you can now download The 7th Guest from Amazon—which means you can look at some of the other games that “Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought.”
Lucius may be right up your alley.
They’ve been trying to get the 7th Guest 3 funded, but both it’s Kickstarter campaign for an entire game and a later crowdfunding effort for an episodic version starting with just the first floor of the mansion failed to meet their minimums.
They might try again at some point.
