I really am hating AOHELL more and more every freaking day. Their mail controls are malfunctioning at the database, so now I am getting all kinds of shit in my mail that I don’t want.
I also Juno Web, which is free, and I think it’s much better than POSAOL in some regards. Juno bombards you with ads, but I never any trouble getting online there at high speed and no probs with busy signals.
What is the majority ruling on which (any) ISP does not suck?
I really like my rinky dink ISP I have at home. It is called Access Orlando. It has only 3 servers and is only accesible in my area. Sure it isn’t 100% reliable, but I don’t get spamed and I almost never get busy signals. I would look for a local rinky dink ISP in your area. Mine cists 15 bucks a month!!! That is it. Gives me 20 MB of web space and email. You get pretty good usernames that route as well.
MSK I had AOL for years. I had it when I was married and my kids were teenagers and kept it after the kids all moved out and I got divorced because it was good for when I traveled because I could get local internet connections. I always used another service provider for my local access at home because the AOL interface is so awkward. For the last year or so I have used Earthlink.net for my local access. I found on my recent move from New Jersey to South Florida that Earthlink also provides local access numbers on the road so about 2 weeks ago I finally canceled my AOL account. When I talked to the AOL rep who handled my cancelation, I could tell she was reading some kind of script that with the intent of maybe talking me out of canceling. When she got to the part “and you have been a member since … 1995?? …” I could tell she was shocked to find someone who had been a member for so long. I guess AOL is used to cancelations.
We’ve been using Earthlink for as long as I can remember (well, that’s not true… we had Compuserve back in the day before flat monthly rates…), and I’ve never had any complaints. Any busy signals would be gone thirty seconds later with a redial, disconnects are rare, etc.
