AOL headline mismatches

When you sign on to AOL, the Welcome page has a feature of revolving headlines and pictures. Sometimes there is a lag so that the headline and the photo do not match.
When I signed on today, there was a picture of a U.S. soldier in Iraq aiming a gun up the side of the building. It was supposed to go with the headline for troops in “ambush alley.” But instead the headline said “Spring Cleaning Made Easy.”

Ya never know. It could have been a spring cleaning rifle. Besides, those Iraqi buildings are pollen hubs!

I worked at AOL in the NOC(Network Operations Center) and I had to deal with these kind of things from time to time.

I remember one particular incident where a picture of a male movie star ran next to a headline about someone being arrested in a porn case. They weren’t related at all but it sure looked that way. We got that one fixed in a jiffy.

There were some other funny things that happened. For example, on AOL you are not supposed to mask cuss words. (A masking example: F**K YOU. While technically you didn’t cuss the point is obvious and it is not allowed. #1) Anyway one day I was at work and the first AD I saw was masked. I got the AD yanked and then had a long talk with the AD department about the issue. Note, it cost alot of money to yank all those ADs and the AD department wasn’t too happy with me.

#1. A note to all those AOL haters. AOL does not and has never seeked out TOS violations. TOS violations are acted upon when members report them.

The irony is it happened again on the same day. I signed on again and there was a headline about surfing “Braving the Waves.” But the photo was of a terrified little Iraqi girl from the war.
