Does the staff at AOL even bother to go after spammers who don’t originate from AOL?
How about the spammers who say they’re from Yahoo or Hotmail but really aren’t? You know, anything that would take more than a half-assed effort at eradication.
According to an old cnet artical (IIRC) AOL had tracked down and sued spammers that sent spam to AOL members - I think there is just too much spam to be delt with this way.
AOL v. Web Communications and Sex Web, Inc.
On March 2, 1998, AOL sued Web Communications for the transmission of unsolicited bulk e-mail to AOL members that advertised pornographic Web sites such as “www.aolsex.net.” On May 10, 2000, U.S. District Court Judge Barry R. Poretz recommended an entry of default judgment in favor of America Online, including injunctive relief and monetary damages in the amount of $1,578,175.48.
AOL v. The Christian Brothers and Jason Vale
On December 18, 1998, AOL sued the group, The Christian Brothers, and its president, Jason Vale in its continuing battle against unsolicited bulk e-mail. The court ruled that AOL was entitled to recover for unjust enrichment since Christian Brothers unlawfully used the AOL mark and misappropriated services that otherwise could have been sold to advertisers.
AOL v. Forrest Dayton, et al.
On December 28, 1999 Judge Claude M. Hilton awarded AOL a total of $1.2 million in monetary damages and permanently enjoined Forrest Dayton from directly or indirectly engaging in the transmission of unsolicited bulk e-mail messages to AOL members.
Well, in my experience, the staff at Hotmail doesn’t seem too concerned about the spammers who use an “@hotmail” in their send line as long as they aren’t really from hotmail. I’ve forwarded them spam I’ve received, with a note saying, “I know this didn’t originate from you guys, but maybe you don’t like the people who ruin your reputation so you’ll go after them.” The first few times they did this, I got a polite response simply saying, “We’ve determined that this message did not originate on our server.”
Since I don’t like wasted e-mail, I don’t send them such things anymore.
