NM - Nelson Mandela (1918-2013) South African activist and former president helped bring an end to apartheid and has been a global advocate for human rights.

NN = Noel Neill, actress best known for playing Lois Lane in serials and on The Adventures of Superman, She also had cameos in Superman (1978), the 1980’s TV series Superboy, and Superman Returns (2006).

NO - New Orleans. In September 2005, when Channel 4 in the United Kingdom decided to air the Simpsons episode A Streetcar Named Marge a week after Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans. Arguing that the episode was an insensitive choice, given recent events, several viewers filed complaints with Ofcom. Two days later, Channel 4 apologized on-air and directly contacted all those who had complained. The New Orleans song, which describes the city as a “home of pirates, drunks and whores,” was edited out of all future showings, and remains absent from all Channel 4 airings as of March 2017.

NP = nondeterministic polynomial time. Informally, NP is the set of all decision problems for which the instances where the answer is “yes” have efficiently verifiable proofs. More precisely, these proofs have to be verifiable by deterministic computations that can be performed in polynomial time.

NQ = Nestlé Quik

Nestlé Quik was launched in 1948. It’s name was changed to Nesquik in 1999. The Nestlé Quik mascot bunny is known as “Quicky.” Make of that what you will.

NR = New Republic and National Review, two of best known American magazines representing the polar opposites on the political spectrum, New Republic on the left and National Review on the right.

NS - North Sydney.

The municipality across the Harbour Bridge from the centre of Sydney, NSW, where I was born many years ago.

NT = New Testament. The oldest book of which is most probably 1 Thessalonians.

NU = Northwestern University. Created near Chicago to serve the “Northwest Territory”. But by the time it opened (1851), all the constituents of the Northwest Territory had been organized into the states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan,and Wisconsin.

Alexander Hamilton not only has a Broadway show named after him, but Hamilton County is named for him as well.

NZ - New Zealand. Many official place names in New Zealand are dual names, incorporating both the original Māori place names and the English names bestowed since European settlement.

OA – Opelika, Alabama

The seat of Lee County, Opelika is the hometown of such diverse notables as Miss America 2013 Mallory Hagan, former Alabama Governor Fob James, and baseball pitcher Roy Lee Jackson.

OB - The “Obie” Awards, given to Off-Broadway performances. Unlike most entertainment awards, with the exception of the Lifetime Achievement and Best New American Play awards, there are no fixed categories at the Obie Awards, and the winning actors and actresses are all in a single category titled “Performance.”

OC - Orange County, The TV series The O.C. is set there.

OE = O. E. Rølvaag

Had the unique status as a great American novelist who did not write in English. Rolvaag came from Norway, and wrote of the immigrant pioneer experience in the New World.
