Apocalyp-sNow...or Storm Track II, The Wrath of Cold

I’m glad to hear somebody say they liked it. Thanks. I start to wonder if I waste my time posting stuff from historical archives after no responses.

I like to see people’s pictures from the past and present.

You know, every generation thinks they invented sex, drinking, and snow.

My organization has declared a 10AM late start with liberal leave in effect. I’m taking leave. I’m achy all over from shoveling all day yesterday and I’m far enough ahead on my project that one day won’t make a difference. Plus my house looks like a dump since I didn’t do anything yesterday but shovel and stick a pan of lasagna into the oven.

If I get really motivate, I’ll start clearing a path to our oil tank. I do not want to run out of heating oil…

I called Yellow Cab at 6:20, (number was busy for 10 minutes then on hold for 10 minutes) and I’M STILL WAITING FOR THE FUCKING CAB!!

Work closure for us. Good for me, I can barely move a muscle.

Thanks to the kind neighbor-with-a-backhoe yesterday, I was forced to get up to go to work today. I cleaned off both of our cars- no easy task, since they’d gotten a liberal coating of ice- and then I drove into the office.

I was there about an hour when they announced that the office was going to shut down for the rest of the day due to worsening road conditions. All those drivers out there are churning the snow into slush and it’s still below freezing, so the roads are actually getting worse. So now I’m back home. Would’ve been nice to know *before *I drove in to work, but a Snow Day is a Snow Day.

I’m not really clear on what’s going to happen the rest of the week, since we’re supposed to get another five inches tomorrow night. I suspect this will be a light week.

Oh, when I got to the office, there was a guy there who’d flown in for an interview. He’d managed to make it in… but the people he was supposed to interview with weren’t able to. Kinda sucks for him.

Oh no - that poor guy! LOL!!

Reminds me of winter 1996. We’d had a major snowstorm early in the week, and as soon as people started shovelling out from that, another system blew in (even closer than this week’s mess, they were literally 24 hours apart). We were closed Monday through Wednesday. Then most of us made it into the office Thursday, and then yet ANOTHER storm blew in so we were closed Friday.

Cabin fever is starting to set in. I keep feeling I should go out to the store for something, even though I don’t really need anything. I think the prospect of getting another 3-6" tomorrow is depressing me more than I’d realized. If I weren’t still watching 4WDs slip and slide on the street next to my house I’d attempt a grocery store run just to get out, but I am so I won’t.

I was working for the MD State Highway Administration during that storm, in the public relations office. I got picked up in one of those giant orange highway trucks.

We got around 27 inches here in Montgomery County MD. And just now I’ve read this:

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN STERLING VIRGINIA HAS ISSUED A
WINTER STORM WARNING FOR…WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM NOON TUESDAY
TO 7 PM EST WEDNESDAY. THE WINTER STORM WATCH IS NO LONGER IN
EFFECT.

  • PRECIPITATION TYPE…SNOW.

  • ACCUMULATIONS…10 TO 20 INCHES.

I’m going to be able to jump out of the second story window no problem.

I just go that update too and came by to post it.

20 inches, and we haven’t even been plowed out from the last one yet. F#$% me with a backhoe.

In fact, if you have one, I’m not far from making a deal . . .

:frowning: :frowning: :frowning: :frowning:

I think someone lives in our neighborhood that works for the city as we always get plowed. I’ve seen them 3-4 times already.

Wish I could help you out. Now I just wonder if I even try to go to work tomorrow or not.

You guys who don’t normally get much snow might not know the technical term - what you got there is known as a “shitload” of snow. Wow! That’s a lotta snow!

Crap- another 10 to 20 inches?

Damn, I need a new game to play.

This is going to be epic. Screw work, I’m not digging my car out again so soon!

…great!

Well, at least I can walk to places to get supplies. No way I’ll be able to get into work though, not until Metro is up and running.
And I really hope the Papa John’s delivery person I saw last night raked in the tips.

Thankfully so far I haven’t seen/heard any accidents outsde. Just some careful negotiation where the road is too narrow for two cars to go by safely.

I’m getting kinda freaked out at the thought of being stuck here for the rest of the week. I’ve got plenty of food and all, but seriously, ten days alone with a toddler? ::Shudders:: She hasn’t even taken a nap since Thursday.

We still haven’t been plowed out. Which is particularly galling because the staging/break spot for the plow trucks is at the 7/11 behind my house. This means that I am kept awake all night by the blinking of their yellow lights, and the sound of their infernal engines - to the point that I’ve actually moved my blanket and pillow to the living room floor the last two nights.

Seriously, they couldn’t just come around the block and plow my street?!?

Whiiiiiiiinnnnnnne! ! !

Yes, that expression was definitely used over the dinner table tonight.

Thank god the feds are closed for tomorrow…above-ground Metro’s still not running, so I have no damn way to get to work.

Don’t be ridiculous. You won’t be able to jump out the second story window.

You’re going to have to go up into the attic and cut a hole in the roof!

I’m convinced that Fate / Og / Flying Spaghetti Monster noticed that I had ordered a snowblower - which I knew wouldn’t be here in time for the 5 inches we’re supposed to get - and decided to really make me cry over not ordering the thing sooner.

I’m seriously debating parking our cars in the driveway, one right behind the other. This way we’ll have one lane somewhat clear - and it’s a hell of a lot easier brushing snow off a car than shovelling a driveway.

I have to be able to get out Wednesday morning (unless we’re lucky enough to have the federal government shut down again). My troop has to pick up our Girl Scout Cookie shipment - 124 cases - from an unplowed parking lot in an abandoned movie theatre on the other side of US 1 (we’re in Virginia).

Wouldn’t be surprised. Another 10" will keep Metro underground.

We saw plows galore a couple of days ago and absolutely bupkis since. I had to shovel a crusty wall of snow to get my car out, and if I weren’t into the brandy, I’d really be feeling it right now. So, I can likely get to work tomorrow just fine but [Kirk] for.how.long [/Kirk], who knows.
