Apocalypse/End-of-World movies

For some reason I find myself in the mood to watch an End of the World movie, and I’d like some recommendations. Maybe spending all morning in a Rosh Hashanah* service has something to do with it… I’m sure the horn that Gabriel blows will be a shofar.

Please note if the film is mostly techie, political, religious, alien-oriented, just plain natural disaster, nuclear disaster, global war, a mix of these, or other.

I tried watching 2012, but it just got goofy after a while. Loved Independence Day. I remember something called Panic in the Year Zero that my parents and I saw at the drive-in when it came out in 1962. Took a look recently, and it was QUITE dated, but amusing.

I just wanna see it all blow up. I don’t want to see any animal abuse/atrocities (call me weird, but don’t scold me for this), so note if there are some of those. Especially graphic scenes involving destruction of pets (inserted to get the audience’s blood pressure up).

Thank you.

*How many will pass from the earth and how many will be created;
who will live and who will die;
who will die at his predestined time and who before his time;
who by water and who by fire,
who by sword, who by beast,
who by famine, who by thirst,
who by upheaval, who by plague,
who by strangling, and who by stoning.
Who will rest and who will wander,
who will live in harmony and who will be harried,
who will enjoy tranquility and who will suffer,
who will be impoverished and who will be enriched,
who will be degraded and who will be exalted…
Or all of the above…

Have you seen On The Beach, filmedin the 60’s. It has been years since I have seen it, or read the Neville Shute book, but interesting story of last survivors of nuclear war waiting for the end in Australia.

I went through my movies and this is what I found.

“Rapture Palooza” is a comedy. (is on Netflix.)

Trailer:

The rapture happens and Craig Robinson as the Anti-Christ moves into the neighborhood. I haven't actually watched this yet, even though I own it, but it looks good from the trailer. **"This is the End"** is another comedy. (not on Netflix)

Trailer:

The rapture happens and our gang tries to deal with it. The trailer really gives a good outline of the movie so if the trailer doesn’t interest you then go ahead and skip it. Also it’s a Seth Rogan, James Franco, Jonah Hill movie so if that’s not your type of comedy then you might not like it. I loved it and have watched it several times since I got it. Emma Watson has a cameo in it, as you can see in the trailer, and she is awesome. She totally steals the scenes. Michael Cera who usually plays meek good guys plays the complete opposite and is fun to watch.

Thanks for those ideas! I remember “On the Beach”-- Fred Astaire was in it (but didn’t dance).

Ok, I’m going to add these even though I don’t think they really fit the apocalypse/end of world theme but I really love them.
-“Shaun of the Dead” a zombie comedy. (not on Netflix streaming)

Trailer:

A really fun movie. The zombies are menacing but not scary at all. The trailer says it all but there’s a lot more humor in the movie than the trailer lets on.

-“Zombieland” another zombie comedy. (not on Netflix streaming)

Trailer:

The trailer gives a good outline of the movie. The zombie outbreak has already happened and our crew is trying to survive. This feels a lot like Shaun of the Dead but not quite as funny but still good in it's own right. Woody Harrelson is great. And Bill Murray has an excellent cameo. -**"The Book of Eli"** a serious movie. Religious but not preachy. Religion is more just the backdrop for the story. (not on Netflix streaming)

Trailer:

Again the trailer gives a good feel for the movie. In a post-apocalyptic world a man travels across country trying to reach a safe haven and runs into trouble along the way as seen in the trailer. He is carrying a special book that he is protecting. Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman and Mila Kunis give excellent performances. -**"Legion"** religious action. (not on Netflix streaming)

Trailer:

The trailer pretty much says it all. God has lost faith in humanity and decides to let us get killed. The Archangel Michael has not lost faith in humanity and comes to protect a special lady pregnant with a special baby.
-“Gabriel” religious action. (not on Netflix streaming)

Trailer:
This quote from wiki is a great synopsis.

OK, missed the edit window.

Gabriel is a dark and gritty film and is an Indie and it kind of shows but the story is really great.

Here’s the trailer:

How about A Boy and His Dog, featuring a young Don Johnson?

Last Night, a 1998 Canadian film.
