Apollo Buffs Cool Saturn5 Drawing

I came across this very detailed cutaway diagram of the inner working of the Saturn 5. Enjoy.

“Chester refused to light the rocket motors with a match…”

Priceless, AND a very cool picture.

Nice. I’ll have to study it in detail this weekend.

Very cool. I just plotted it out on 42" paper.

I totally have to find a way to do that.

I’m not a space or engineering buff of any kind, but that’s spectacular.

Any half way decent copy shop should be able to do it.

I thought the style of this drawing was familiar, it’s by the same guy who did the Cross-Sections books for…children. Sorry I can’t vouch for it’s accuracy. It still looks cool.

It’s probably easier just to buy The Incredible Everything. The author does the same thing with a variety of other things both in that book and others.

For us Yanks, “paraffin” = Brit for kerosene.

…for about $100, based on my experience.

Wonder if anyone sells this picture as a poster…

You can import it into Excel and print it out- 4x7 = 28 pages!

Ahhh, many thanks. My brain hurt for a while.

For you Brits, “paraffin” = Yank for a waxy substance. Per Wiki:

“In chemistry, paraffin is the common name for the alkane hydrocarbons with the general formula CnH2n+2. Paraffin wax refers to the solids with 20 ≤ n ≤ 40 .” Us Yanks usually omit the “wax” and just call it “Paraffin”.

Wow.

Seeing how packed into this monstrous engine the astronauts were reminds me again that if I were one of them I would be shrieking like 1000 schoolgirls the whole way up.

When I went to the Space Museum in Huntsville, Alabama I was surprised to see that the Mercury rocket (with capsule) was only as tall as a house. But the Saturn rocket was taller than that lying on it’s side. (all measurements approximated)
I’d watched the space program from the beginning, but took a lot of it for granted. I never realized how massive the Saturn rocket was.

I once heard that they wanted to take the rocket that I saw on its side and put it upright. I’m guessing that someone complained it would be unsightly or a plane would hit it. That’s too bad.

Although I agree with the cancellation of the renewed moon program, I regret that I won’t ever see one of these big rockets take off. One day I’ll go down to Florida for a launch, but the liftoff doesn’t appear to be as awesome as the Apollo flights.

All always be grateful for Apollo 11 because that was what it took for my Dad to buy a color TV. I don’t know if he was aware that the actual landing would be broadcast in black & white.

Thanks that is awesome!

I really wish image files would be saved in the correct format. A gif or png of this file would be perfect, with no compression artifacts; and would probably be smaller.*

Image editing software should suggest appropriate formats because people just don’t seem to know.

Jpegs are for photographs or photo realistic images, everything else should pretty much be in gifs or pngs.

There is a foldout of the Apollo project that you could cut out and mount.

Amazon review from a stuffy librarian lady includes this: “The Saturn V occupies a double fold-out that will quickly be tattered with use.”
The <sniff> was audible to me when I read this.

The museum (US Space and Rocket Center) now has a full-size mockup of the Saturn V, standing upright. It completely dwarfs other rockets, as you can see here. (The second tallest rocket is the Saturn IB - though admittedly it’s a bit further away in this photo.)

The “real” Saturn-V is still lying on its side, but it’s been moved into a new building.
