Apparently, Denorex shampoo kills head lice

Quasi - Something like this.

Hi Quasi!

I think you are right about going to see a doctor. Lice aren’t the only things that can cause terrible scalp itch. I’ve had it myself and know what torture it is.

One thing you might try is a thorough soaking in olive oil, followed by 30 minutes under an old fashioned hair dryer. You know, the ones with the caps that blow up? Those can dry out the nits and keep them from hatching.

It will also work for many of the other causes of scalp itch, like dryness and dandruff. It won’t cure psoriasis but it can really help with the symptoms.

But don’t keep using the denorex multiple times per day. Wash your hair each evening with it if you wish, but no more than once each day.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, StGermain and TruCelt and EVERYONE!

I am now completely BALD it took me and the beautifuk Dondra cllose to an hour and a half (can’t leave even a quarter of an inch or they’ll grab on again.)

Ordered the spray, my friends and we have some Olive Oyle (arf, arf) as well. I’ll have to go to my niece’s shop to get underneath one of those Conehead things.

It’s been great getting even a little more sleep and I look like I just got out of a knife fight, from the scrapes and little holes from that comb (round, lot of teeth), but I don’t care, except to wonder if this could have been the cause of my anemia (Hgb is right on the borderline)?

Thanks again, y’all. Once again Dopers save the day! Huzzah!

With sincere thanks (and a lot of choking up and holding back some droplets of rain)

Quasi

Coming in a bit late, but: I cannot imagine a case of head lice resulting in enough blood loss to trigger anemia.

Baking your head under a hair dryer would aggravate any non-critter-related causes of scalp itch, for what it’s worth.

As far as not liking dirty hair: I gather that’s true enough; they find squeaky-clean hair easier to grab onto. But once you’ve got them, refraining from shampooing won’t do any good.

This part raises some red flags. A louse might crawl onto your ear but will not stay there - nothing to hang onto, too exposed. If you’re truly feeling itches there, that part might be psychosomatic. I know every time I felt a twinge, when Moon Unit had her bout of them, I jumped and was sure I’d missed getting rid of them :(.

If you’re doing the shower cap with conditioner (or olive oil or whatever), you shouldn’t feel any crawlies - the idea is the stuff makes it very tough for them to move. If your scalp is already itchy from the irritation, you might continue to feel that.

Hopefully this is all long since OBE since you got that buzz cut.

So now they’re gone, but my head looks like feces. The hair will grow back I know, but for now I have to wear a wool cap.

Because I am mostly a recluse (except for doctor visits and groceries) I know they had to come from someone at my son’s funeral (hugs and all that).

They didn’t JUST leave though. For about three days after, I was still pulling nits off my head. They were on this special comb with metal things placed closely together. we checked and there was still some hair longer than the rest up there.

I wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemy.

Thanks once again to all of you.

Bill and Dondra

Quasi, I’m so sorry about your son. Please accept my condolences.

Thank you.

Quasi - I was talking to my neighbor yesterday and she told me they no longer check kids for lice in school, or require that they leave and be treated before they come back. No notification to the parents of the other kids, either. So it can run rampant. She said she washes her kids’ hair with a lice-preventative shampoo.

Oh, Bill - I had not read your blog in a few months so I did not know of your son’s passing. I am so very, very sorry. Hugs to you and Dondra from Typo and me.

Well, not quite (the aftermath, I mean). I know y’all must have been *sick with * worry about my lice, and I fervently hope none of you called in sick with concern about your old friend Quasi,

What happened after shaving my head was they found other places to investigate (eyebrows, the rare neckhair missed when we first shaved and once even in my nose (no damage).

So now I follow the protocol I will list here.

  1. In the morning, first thing — wash hair thoroughly with Denorex.

  2. Leave on for 10 minutes, then rinse and comb out nits as best I can. I do not bother Dondra because she still has problems with the death of our son, and I do what I am supposed to do: wait to be called. One curious thing though: She is impervious to lice as well as fleas (that’s another thing - got those as well). So I had her look and every time she did, she saw nothing even after I had just showered for the second time, and you could see the little “mounds” appearing as they escaped the Teatree liquid handwass,

  3. Lightly rinse hair before bed and once again was with normal shampoo followed by more nit picking followed by a big layer of Teatree lotion.
I’m getting the feeling you don’t believe me", I asked.
“I believe you believe”, was the answer. I didn’t push it. Just said, okay and went and went to wash clothes. It’s really a two-person job, but okay, this too shall pass.

  4. bMama Zappa**, we both remember your and your husband’s real names, but did not remember if you gave us permission the last time we had a real-life encounter.

D says hello to both and mighty hugs to both of you with lots of love. She remembers the time, her stroke and lots of other groovy things you two
did for us during her hospital stay several years ago,.

We thank you both for your condolences.

Mites. Going on 4 months now. Nasty little buggers. Don’t get 'em. Can’t touch my wife, kiss her, hug her and all that lovey-dovey stuff. Dermatologist put me on cream and shampoo. Don’t have time to name them, but one starts with “keto” and the other with “pher-something” Alternating with Denorex.

The trick is to shampoo with Denorex, then soak in vinegar (I’ve used Apple Cider Vinegar). The vinegar displves the glue that keeps eggs glued to the hair. This unglues the eggs from the hair and allows them to wash away, especially with the lice comb. Both the shampoo amd vinegar dries the hair, so make sure and finish with a conditioning treatment and some leav in conditioner, to restore moisture.

Attack of the zombie-lice!!
