Let it never be said that I won’t take good advice. Just so you know, pricciar, my screen name is Math Geek, and my post count is now at the stunning total of three.
Hmmm…obviously I need more things to post about. My first post was about how I do topology for a living, and my second post was about the Central Limit Theorem, so clearly I’m tapping a dry well here. Any suggestions?
Well, you could always throw your hat into the Presidential Ring and join that fray. Definitely a way to be “intellectual” (hehehehaha) and get post count up. Or you could just reply to all of the replies to this thread.
::This is my shameful way of boasting my post count::
Well, you could explain me what is topology. I have heard it mentioned several times, yet I have not investigated what is it all about. If you could use your mathematical wizardry to explain to me, in layman terms, your topologycal secrets, I will greatly appreciate it.
I am glad to see you posting Math Geek. I will be sure not to forget the name, this time.
Hey, point me over to your topology thread, I would be interested in reading it.
Interesting things to post about? I am not real sure? You could go into great debates and start some trouble about Number theory, but I can’t gurantee how many people will be willing to dispute your numbers.
Well. I am sure you will come up with some cool stuff to post about. I am glad my powers of persuasion worked on you.
Now, Would you like to invest in my multi level marketing plan that is a deadlock gurantee to make you millions?
Hey, Math Geek, I’m a grad student in topology to; nice to meet ya!
Quasar, the standard way of describing topology in layman’s terms is to call it “rubber sheet geometry”. It studies the properties of objects that are invariant under stretching, bending, compressing,… as long as there’s no tearing of the shape. A common example is would be to say that a coffee mug and a donut are topologically equivalent (homeomorphic) because they both have that single hole through them (the hole through the handle of the coffee mug, the hole of the donut). Anyway, that’s it in a nutshell without getting too involved.
