Apparently justice Alito is sympathetic to the January 6 rioters

Apparently justice Alito is sympathetic to the January 6 rioters (although he blames his wife for this):

One of the homes flying an inverted flag during that time was the residence of Supreme Court Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr., in Alexandria, Va., according to photographs and interviews with neighbors.

The upside-down flag was aloft on Jan. 17, 2021, the images showed. President Donald J. Trump’s supporters, including some brandishing the same symbol, had rioted at the Capitol a little over a week before. Mr. Biden’s inauguration was three days away. Alarmed neighbors snapped photographs, some of which were recently obtained by The New York Times. Word of the flag filtered back to the court, people who worked there said in interviews.

While the flag was up, the court was still contending with whether to hear a 2020 election case, with Justice Alito on the losing end of that decision. In coming weeks, the justices will rule on two climactic cases involving the storming of the Capitol on Jan. 6, including whether Mr. Trump has immunity for his actions. Their decisions will shape how accountable he can be held for trying to overturn the last presidential election and his chances for re-election in the upcoming one.

Honestly if the Democrats win back control of the House they should hold impeachment hearings on this matter. Alito is a shitstain on the SCOTUS but this is really beyond the pale. And his wimpish blaming of his wife is ridiculous.

Yes. 100%. He can show his ‘colors’ other was. As he has done. Sheeessss if I saw the flag flying upside-down, I’d call 911. It’s a distress signal, Help me. Sorta like SOS.

It’s not saying the USA is in distress, it says I’m in distress. Flying in front of the household of a SCOTUS judge? Shit.

How long was it flying upside-down?

I saw this in the news a couple of days ago. Honestly, as much as the Supreme Court is packed with right-wing ideologues, Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas are in a qualitatively different class of their own. They’re literally nothing but political hacks who are offensive to the fundamental principles of jurisprudence. They’re not even pretending to be judges any more. They don’t care, because they don’t have to, and they have zero ethics.

So, Alito and Thomas are full-blown MAGA. Let that sink in.

Consider what MAGA represents in this country. It’s people who dress up in stupid looking red hats and other Trump paraphernalia, and think of and act out in ways designed specifically to attack anyone that they deem to be anti-Trump.

Look at Clarence Thomas’ wife. She’s a nut.

Alito is just another MAGA nut, who happens to be a Supreme Court judge.

This is example # 3,332,851 of the Danger that MAGA poses to this country.

I would argue that – at least, in Thomas’s case – the difference is quantitative.

And can be measured in $USD

In before “oh I guess you just don’t want SCOTUS justices’ wives’ not have opinions or jobs or hobbies and just sit at home indoors locked in a crate all day”. It’s coming.

Wasn’t there a time when conservatives lost their shit if they perceived the American flag was being disrespected? Now they put blue stripes on it and fly it upside down and all kinds of stuff.

If they perceive it being disrespected, yes.

They just have really lousy perception.

She has admitted that she used to be in a cult.

The irony of her failure to recognize the MAGA cult just burns.

And let us not forget that Alito is the leading suspect for leaking the Dobbs opinion.

We know he leaked another opinion once before.

One of the most cynical things ever said:

It is true that liberty is precious; so precious that it must be carefully rationed. - Lenin

But it’s not just Bolsheviks, no. The GOP sees no middle between authoritarianism and anarchy. The rational rations of a free society should plop heavily on the Masters of the Universe like Donald Trumps, who poop into gold toilets and make sex pests of themselves with impunity. Or ClarenceThomas; who believes in the rights for only the right sort of African Americans, and then may regale the women employees with Long Dong Silver, and take bribes from billionaires. “Civil Rights” just means that steps need always be taken to ensure the rest of us stay “civil” and in our “rightful” place sucking hind tit.

As I said in another thread, I have two take-aways about this latest news about Alito:

  1. He hates America and what it stands for. He wants to change American into a theocracy.
  2. He’s a liar. And a very bad one.

Great choice for the Supreme Court.

QFT. To be sure though, I’m fairly certain if you were to ask Alito what “America stands for” and were somehow able to get a true and honest answer from him, it would be the polar opposite of what you or I or anyone else on the board would answer to for the same question.

Even if someone goes there I think it is fair to say a flag on a flag pole in your yard implicates the whole household to the message that flag is conveying. How could Alito not notice it and not have an opinion about it?

Has anyone on the board ever posted this?

That Alito would think anyone would believe his totally lame explanation (“It’s all my wife’s fault – for days, I knew nothing”) is another strike against him. That he would throw his wife under the bus to try to save himself is yet another. What a reprehensible piece of work.

You can search up various threads here on Ginny Thomas’s involvement in January 6th, as well as Jane Roberts earning 8 figures of commissions in dealing with law firms having business before SCOTUS.

The bog-standard party line, repeated here by multiple peope as well as by others on other sites, is some variation on “I guess you feel SCOTUS wives should shut up and stay home in the kitchen, feminism is only good when liberals do it!” with a generous sprinkling of “appearance of bias doesn’t always mean appearance of bias”.

Only if you take it out of context. He was speaking about cases where simply taking or doing whatever you want would result in grossly unfair inequalities. The passage in which this quote of his first appears (which is actually in a book by Sidney and Beatrice Webb, not Lenin himself) gives the example of governments rationing sugar during World War I, limiting the freedom of people to buy as much sugar as they want so that others would still have at least some access to it. There’s nothing particularly cynical about that point of view.

It’s not disrespect when a conservative does it. It’s only disrespect when a liberal does it. Even if it’s the exact same act.

It’s like calling America great. A MAGA (or a Reaganite) wants to restore America to greatness - which must mean America isn’t currently great. But any Democrat who says or even implies that America is not 100% great right now and always has been and always will be is a traitor who hates America.

I’ve been reading that the ethics rules for SCOTUS needs to be strengthened.

I donno. Let them show their true colors. What needs to be strengthened is the way to remove them.

I’ve no solution for that. Thoughts SDMB?
