I looked in Google Earth with 3D buildings turned on. There’s a couple of narrow approaches that you could come straight in but most of the buildings are more or less the same height.
Coming down at an angle, it’s fully exposed.

I believe it’s a condo building, not rental apartments. So those who live there own their own residences (unless they’re renting from the condo owners).

Concerning the OP’s suggestion that the White House be turned into a homeless shelter–that’s not going to happen. The place is a public building, maintained by the White House Historical Association. It’s open for tours & used for state occasions.
The building includes an apartment for the first family. A recent Architecture Digest showed how the Obamas decorated it–mixing some modern art in with the relics & adding comfy couches to some rooms. It’s hardly to Trump’s taste, but he’ll still have to spend a few nights there each week; let’s hope he holds up until his Russian Gangster style can prevail. Perhaps wifie can visit a few times to meet with the decorators.

I’ve visited the U.S. in the past and would like to do so in future, so I’d like to stress this observation is hypothetical only, but if Trump Tower is within a kilometer of other buildings of comparable or greater height, does the Secret Service have to monitor all of them for potential snipers? Does Trump’s floor have to fitted with extra-thick windows, at taxpayer expense?
I realize as a matter of practicality, if a sniper team had lots of resources and lots of patience and was willing to die in the course of fulfilling the mission, no president could ever be completely safe, but at least the White House’s local neighborhood is less conducive to this sort of thing, no?

Security in front of Trump Tower
No problem: he’ll permanently rent several floors of his Manhattan hotel to the government on an annual lease. I can’t even imagine how many millions of dollars that will be per year. Win-win!

How is security and meetings handled for heads-of-state and other high level politicians when they visit with the UN?

They mostly don’t require anything like the level security that the President of the United States gets.

They visit the UN, typically only for a few hours. They don’t live there.
3 The UN has its own campus, conveniently at the end of 42nd Street (and therefore not on the way to anywhere else). Trump Tower is a multi-use building, right in the middle of 5th Avenue. So securing someone at the UN buildings is a much less disruptive affair.
People get stabbed at the U.N., though. I saw it in that movie about that guy what got chased by a airplane.
