I must be missing something here. Identity theft is illegal. Whether the person is an illegal immigrant or not has nothing to do with it. What is the problem here?
There is no problem, other than that the government would prefer not to deport “law abiding” immigrants, and if they catch them for identity theft, they have to deport them. So the government would prefer that Sheriff Arpaio turn a blind eye the way most counties do.
When I managed a pizza place, we got a $10,000 fine for any missing or incorrect documents. But the employees were not questioned, could still work for us, no action was taken. It seemed like it was about collecting revenue rather than actually trying to make sure our workforce was legal. I think they call that a racket, don’t they?
The evidence does show that Arpaio is in general lying to you and many others. The reality (and the evidence was cited already) is that the undocumented are not the main reason why identity theft is happening and since that is the case when Arpaio closed his “identity theft division” when he could not do more mass arrests **it is clear that identity theft was not the main reason for that office existing. **
While the biggest reasons why identity theft continues and with less support from the Sheriff’s office, you should not ignore that it was pointed before that Arpaio has very bigoted reasons why he is not doing enough when dealing with more egregious crimes. And he continues with his tactic regarding the defense for his crimes, that tactic that tells him that his defense for those crimes should be paid by the citizens of the state and the county.
Now THAT is a racket.
If you know that there is a local employer with a largely illegal workforce, how can a sheriff NOT go after them? IT’s not like his raids come up empty.
Then he should stop beating around the bush, it is not about “identity theft”, so he should drop that tripe. And once again: those raids also affected legal residents and citizens.
Ignoring that is what got Arpaio into trouble. Besides his mania of abusing his power by investigating the relatives of the judge in an attempt at intimidation or to derail the case against him.
