Apple TV free for days of three (January 3rd-5th)

A chance to binge on something if you don’t already have Apple.

All you need is an Apple ID and password to sign in for the free two-day weekend promotional period.

That leaves many of us out.

I could be wrong, but it looks like you don’t need an apple device to get an Apple ID.

You just need to create an account, no Apple product needed.

Indeed, I am streaming “For All Mankind” from Apple TV on a PC.

Well, I know what I’m doing this weekend. I have a FireTV, so I’m pretty sure I won’t have any problem installing the app on it.

I was planning to sign up for Apple TV+ anyway. so creating the account won’t be an issue, either.

As an AppleTV+ starter kit, May I recommend the following shows (in a loose, descending order of my favs):

-Severance
-Silo
-Mythic Quest
-Ted Lasso
-For All Mankind
-Shrinking

Thank you for this!

That is my same exact list, even in the same order.

Having read the first series of Silo books I have no interest in watching the series. Nor , from what I’ve seen in ads for it, do I have any interest in watching Ted Lasso.

I have a Post-It note with a list of shows and movies on Apple TV+ that I do want to watch. I will add Mythic Quest to it.

I would add at least Slow Horses to the recommendations. Probably Dickinson, too. (If you like The Great, you’ll probably like Dickinson.)

If you’re interested in travel-type shows, I’ll throw in a recommendation for the “Long Way” series that document Ewan McGregor and his pal Charley Boorman’s epic motorcycle journeys.

In terms of travel shows, Apple TV+ also has The Reluctant Traveler, with Eugene Levy traveling the world and staying at nice hotels. (Though that would not be my first choice if you only have a limited time to watch the channel for free.)

I would (heartily) endorse all of those except… I couldn’t get past the first 60 seconds of Shrinking. Just did not grab me.

However, Panchinko was/is great and could easily replace Shrinking for those who, like me, need to be quickly drawn into a series to keep watching.

Oh, yes. That too! In fact, I’d say a (short—they’re only six episodes each) season of that is the easiest of all to binge. NormallyI try to spread a series out to one episode a week, but I just couldn’t do it with the first three seasons of Slow Horses (season 4 came out after I made it through the first three, so there I had no choice but to follow the release schedule).

I also kind of liked Foundation (though I understand that series is not so universally praised, and I can sort of understand why).

I will definitely try to watch Slow Horses since spy shows are my favorite.

I am not into comedy or rom com.

I liked several shows on Apple TV+, including Slow Horses, Ted Lasso, Shrinking and Lessons in Chemistry. There were other shows that were also popular, like The Morning Show, but I never got interested.

Wikipedia has a list of the original programs on the service.

I don’t know how you could even begin to get a idea of what a show is like from just the first 60 seconds. In the first 60 seconds of Shrinking you barely meet two of the main cast and nobody else. It says almost entirely nothing about what the show is like or about.

I say this as a child of the 70s/80s who grew up on Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Blade Runner: Harrison Ford in this series is probably the best and the funniest that he has ever been.

I’ll concede it’s as much a “me” problem as anything. FWIW, I haven’t completely written off the series—it’s still on my watch list—but at the time I was looking for something immediately engaging, and Shrinking… wasn’t. I blame (1) PTSD and (2) Dark Matter (an Apple TV series that I have written off, after having foolishly sat through the entire first episode).

Actually, there is a different first scene than I was thinking, but it still introduced just two main characters (protagonist and neighbor, not protagonist and daughter).
