My son moved into an apartment with a friend and I guess there’s a problem getting cable service into their bedrooms. One of his buddies says an Apple TV has pretty much solved his problem. So, I’d like to get one for my son. Checking Amazon, and unlike when we purchased ours, there are now several models. Can anyone give me any advice as to which model might be best. I know my definition of the problem is hardly specific, but it’s all I have. Just don’t want to spend money unnecessarily. Thx.
Going to the “horse’s mouth” (as it were) shows only one current model, at $99. If Amazon has other ones, they are probably previous generations.
Even better, you can get a refurb directly from Apple for $75. There are no moving parts and it still has a warranty.
The current model has no onboard storage. All content is streamed, either locally or from the internet. I have an extensive music, movies, tv show, and photo collection that I stream from my iMac (but a PC will work). The Apple TV does a great job of streaming third-party content. Netflix and Youtube are favorites in my house, but ESPN and sports packages are out there. Some of the third-party services do require a cable subscription, defeating the cord cutting aspect.
I keep expecting an updated piece of hardware. It is nifty and very good at what it does, but the opportunity for it to do more is there.
