Apples and Orangs

I just heard an astonishing report on Quirks and Quarks (go to Home | Quirks & Quarks with Bob McDonald | CBC Radio and click on Listen to the latest show if you want to hear it) that says that orang utans in a number of zoos have been given I-pads and have learned to use them–with great enjoyment. Only orangs. Gorillas would ignore them and chimps would just destroy them. But orangs are curious and learn to use them.

They told a joke that if you left a screwdriver in a chimp’s cage, he destroy it, a gorilla would pretend he hadn’t seen it while an orang would go away for a couple hours and then come back and use it to get out of the cage.

That is pretty nifty. And kudos for the thread title

I was listening to a bit of that radio show today but I missed the part about the orang-utans. I’ll have to go listen to it. Thanks.

Here’s a video of orangutans at the Milwaukee County Zoo using iPads.

They don’t actually give the iPads to the orangs to physically hold, but they do show videos to the apes and allow them to reach through the mesh screen to interact with various apps.

This comes as no surprise. Orangs were documented as playing chess back in the 1920s.

Thanks. The title came out of the blue. Once it came I just had to use it.

And, thus confirming Apple’s intended audience level for their technology.

Wow, chimps are smart!
