"Apprentice" finale -- 12/15/05

I’m wondering if DT really wanted Rebecca…but felt he had to pick Randall. Because, let’s face it, if Randall hadn’t won, there would be no end of “If he couldn’t win, there’s no way any black man would.”

However, I’ll bet dollars to doughnuts that Rebecca ends up with a job offer anyway. Not as ‘sub apprentice’, not running either of the projects that were showcased, but Trump has a LOT of companies.

BTW, has anything ever been heard from any of the winers beside Bill?

Kelly showed up briefly earlier this season, had a single-line banter with Trump, and then returned to his well-deserved obscurity.

As far as I’ve seen, Kendra hasn’t been heard from or talked about. Not that I’ve looked very hard, of course.

Kendra was seated next to the Yahoo CEO in the audience.

Disagree completely. The best reason against hiring Rebecca at the end of the show is that it sets a bad precedent. The contest for the final two will be meaningless in the future if The Donald always has the option of hiring both candidates at the finale show. That would mean that if you make the final two and you did a good job on the last task, then you’re automatically hired. That would suck. Trump does not need Randal’s permission to hire Rebecca outside of the show. He can hire her and anyone else he wants; they just won’t be The Apprentice. Randal did the right thing.

Disagree.

The schtick of this program was that it’s supposed to be a “job interview.” I mean it’s not, really–it’s a reality TV program–but it’s sold as an “interview process.”

If you think this is strictly and only a game, like checkers or squash or poker, then it makes sense that there should be only one winner. But if you think The Apprentice has any overlap with the real world at all, then why shouldn’t Trump hire two candidates? If you were running a multi-billion dollar company and had two outstanding people who you thought would make the company scads of money, wouldn’t you hire both?

Of course, by the same token, Trump should be able to hire neither of them. Now wouldn’t that make for some good TV?

Nonsense. First, just because he hires two people this time wouldn’t mean that he’d have to hire two people in all future seasons. It would NOT make the contest meaningful at all.

Second, as zut pointed out, this is also an extended job interview. If an employer finds two qualified candidates, why not hire them both? It happens, even in the real world.

And third, nobody said that Trump had to hire Rebecca as a co-apprentice. As I pointed out earlier, Randall could have recommended hiring her in some other capacity. This would have been a classy gesture on his part, and it would have demonstrated that he meant it when he claimed to respect Rebecca.

Randall’s response displayed no class whatsoever. What a weasel.

I misssed the last 30 minutes, got bored actually and didn’t want to sit thru a Trump LoveFest.

After reading the recap on NBC, and here, is this what ahppened?

He hired Randall?
Did he offer a job to Rebecca too?
What did Randall say or do that made him a weasel?

Yes he did. No he didn’t. He asked Randall if he should hire Rebecca and Randall went on some schpiel about how doing that would diminish the name of the show.

I’m in the “Randall = classless” camp. By hiring Randall, DT made it clear that he was the first choice, so he already won. His win wouldn’t have been diluted in any way by also hiring Rebecca, especially since they chose to work on separate projects. As soon as he advised Trump against hiring Rebecca, my impression of him plummeted to the depths of Tana during last year’s final boardroom, when she was “woot! woot!-ing” about her contribution to the stupid Pontiac brochure.

The audience should have booed him off the stage.

I guess I missed both Kendra and the Yahoo CEO in the audience. I wasn’t looking all that hard, however.

Speaking of the Yahoo CEO, however, just a few minutes ago Rebecca was on the Today Show and they brought in the Yahoo CEO, who offered Rebecca a job doing a show on Yahoo Finance. Rebecca’s measured response? “I’d love to continue this conversation.” Smart girl – negotiate from a position of strength! It’s pretty obvious she’s going to come out great no matter what happens. I still can’t believe she’s only 23; does she have icewater running through her veins or what?

Another season of The Apprentice is in the can. I think it is safe to say Randal was viewed as the driving force behind this show pretty much from the beginning, but kudos to Rebecca and a couple of others for being good enough to make it interesting the entire way through. The Raj Ratings. applauds this season. Clearly better than seasons 2 and 3 and close to on par with season 1. Minimal crazies with short term life spans, quite a few competent people, a couple of outstanding folks, mostly accurate firings, and tasks that seemed somewhat interesting. So, job well done. And frankly, I am glad it is done. Raj Ratings confessional time: I’m tired. Work is absolutely destroying my schedule right now. I needed this show over just so I didn’t feel bad about having to tape it, find time to watch it 2 days later, and find time to write a half-hearted summary 2 days after that. The ratings hve suffered mightily which is why I am considering hanging it up. But, no rash judgments here. I’ll see how I feel the closer I get to the next season of tomfoolery.

** Looking for Love: Bachelorettes in Alaska** - Or, these people are in a cold, lonely place with no hope for love or revival
Melissa, Jennifer W, Kristi, Jennifer M, Markus, ** Brian **, Clay, Adam, Felisha, Alla (S)- The few, the proud, the mostly forgotten and overlooked. Of those that were fired but not brought back for the final task, I would think the best business person would be Alla. But, she is also not easy to manage so it’s easy to see why no one picked her. If I had to pick someone after that, I’d strongly consider Adam. Seems smart and will work hard. Seems like a decent person. And seems really moldable and willing to learn.
Chris – Those brought back deserve a little extra love. It was nice to see that all 6 had good relationships with their bosses, worked hard, and did so without complaining all while aiming for a victory. And, it wasn’t out of selfishness, personal redemption, or spite. Rebecca and Randal were good enough to inspire loyalty, confidence, and desire. As for Chris, I still think his ranks as the worst firing of the season because I think he could have just as easily been in the final 2.
Toral – Some small amount of redemption. Of course her big task was stuffing bags and keeping quiet. So, there you go. Her skill set.
Josh – I knew from the start that he would be somebody’s Troy and it makes sense it ended up being Randal. Josh is clearly quite good, but not as good as the big dog so he takes a secondary role but does the little things that help the lead guy win.
James – Seems very solid if somewhat unspectacular. But, if he were a math equation, he would certainly be an addition.
Mark – Hardest physical worker? Probably.
Marshawn – Kind of Toralesque in that we didn’t see her do too much, but other than the week she was fired she seemed a likely final 4 pick so she is pretty good at what she does.

Boot Camp - Or, in major need of a butt-kicking, but actual physical contact isn’t allowed
Rebecca (S)- Rebecca is really good and came off well, so I felt bad about putting her in the fired group. So, she gets a little love this week. It wasn’t so much she lost as it is she didn’t win. I guess her big mistake is being Randal-lite. Good education, but his is better. Good experience, but his is better. A couple of hiccups in the task, but on par with his. A worse PM record, etc. Sure, she seems tough and focused, but I don’t think she has enough of an edge there to make up for all of the other little edges she loses elsewhere. Trump is correct when he says she has a bright future. And, she’ll probably benefit mightily from not being tied to Trump and able to pick and choose her path. Ultimately, she made a mistake in so ofter referring to Yahoo as her customer. When a charity is in a task, Trump views them as the ultimate customer.

Big Brother - Or, beginning the downward spiral into ultimately being canceled

Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica - Or, ultimately harmless and forgettable fluff in need of a shot in the arm

American Idol - Or, mostly positive so far but still in major danger of falling apart when a tough theme night comes around

Survivor - Or, when they’re good, they are really good. But, there are enough rough spots to keep them from the top spot

The Amazing Race - Or, the king of the hill. A well oiled machine that shows no signs of slowing down unless a taxi gets in the way
Randal (TAR)- Credit is due to the editors. After week 1 of the finale, I was pretty sure Randal’s goose was cooked. He had a horrible edit. And, week 2 made it a bit better, but he wasn’t exactly rosy. Still, I think this is the correct and easy pick to make. He seems to have pretty much every quality Trump might want and I think he ultimately goes down as being a little better than even Bill. The weather mistake was pretty big and a major oversight, but his recovery was quite nice. I thought it was pretty unfair of Trump to ask him if he should hire Rebecca. Randal will take some heat for saying no, but he is right. This is a show to find the best of the best. That’s Randal. If Trump wants Rebecca offer her a job that’s a notch or two down the totem pole and do so off air. This was Randal’s moment which was sidetracked a bit. I think with that one answer, Randal might be off of Rebecca’s Christmas card list.

The Rancic-Perdew Corollary – This held true again. No mocking moments of the final 2, maybe a 2-3 week lag for those mocked the most before their ultimate demise. It proved a solid indicator of those with a future and those that were just biding their time until firing.

The worst part was the answer that Randal gave.

He didn’t say that Rebecca was unqualified. He didn’t even say that she needed further experience or refinement. Nothing he said pertained to Rebecca’s qualifications or lack thereof.

What was Randal’s rationale? That there should only be one apprentice, period. What a lame and petty answer.

Oh, and he didn’t even bother to shake her hand. Criminy.

Mind you, I’m sure that he’s still a pretty good guy, and that he has the respect of his teammates. Last night though, and ugly part of him shone through.

The main reason I’m glad that Randal said no is because it would ruin the show. It’s a game show. The entire hook is that there can be only one winner. Forcing the winner to share with the loser destroys any reason to watch the show. Why don’t we just have two Superbowl winners as well? And two Presidents? If winning doesn’t mean anything then why have a contest?

I think it was pretty crappy to step on Randal’s moment of victory by asking him to share it. Nobody else has had to share it, why should he.

Also…Rebecca didn’t deserve it. She sucks. She had a crappy record as a PM and the only time she won was because she had Randal as her partner. She also totally failed at the final task. She has no substance at all. No leadership ability, no real intelligence, no creativity, nothing. She should be working at a Gap or something, not running a company.

That’s actually a pretty good point about Rebecca. If I may make an NBA reference: She’s Steve Francis. A player with a lot of skill and can certainly do some good things on the court. But, he doesn’t make those around them better. They basically reach their own limits and he doesn’t help them get better and win games they shouldn’t win. Rebecca is similar. Has good skills, but when her team is poor she ultimately looks solid but loses. When her team is already good (when she had Randal), she’s the exact same player but looks better because her team was strong on it’s own.

I’m pretty surprised that Joe Piscopo actually bailed on the event. I expected that to be an overdramatized problem that would be resolved in the first two minutes of the finale.

Through the final boardroom the question kept coming up “Is there such a thing as too much education or too much success?”
I think Randall answered it himself in the end with a resounding YES!

With all of that success and education comes ego. And you know who people with big egos work for best? Themselves.
Randall has proven he could be a leader and run his own business’ but how is he going to handle working under someone else. What happens the first time he has a disagreement with Trump? He’s going to assume he’s right and Trump is wrong because he’s more educated than Trump is after all.

“Randall, you’re hired.”
(Ego starts to inflate, inflate, inflate…)
“Randall, do you think I should hire her also?”
“No Mr. Trump. Your wrong and I’m right. Do not hire this woman! I share glory with no one because I am better than everyone.”

I have to agree. DT was in the wrong for even asking him that question.

First of all, while Rebecca is talented and I like the intensity she exudes, she and Randall really aren’t in the same league. I wouldn’t go so far as to call her a fraud, but DT may have been blinded to her faults because she could always speak well in the boardroom (even though I found her ardent “Mr. Trumps” a bit obsequious and unnecessary for my tastes). She also knew how to keep her cool. Other than though those two pluses, though, I can’t see how she was anywhere stellar enough to warrant sharing an apprenticeship with Randall.

Look at the stats, yall. Even after you put aside Randall’s education and experience, his performance on the show speaks for itself. He had an undefeated record as PM. His fundraiser was essentially 11,000 times the success that Rebecca’s was. He also had more backers among the other interviewees. Who did Rebecca have in her cheering section? Toral? Bwhahaha!

For a 23 year-old she is impressive, but she is no prodigy. So in my opinion asking Randall if he would be willing to share the spotlight is like asking Itzhak Perlman to share first chair with the best violinist from North Atlanta High School. Randall had every right to say no. Rebecca is not in his league and he shouldn’t have to pretend that she is just so that everyone can live happily ever after.

Isn’t he supposed to have a Plan B?!? Carolyn always does.

Hee!

I just feel the need to address one thing- while Randall’s task generated $11,000 in charity donations, we don’t really know how much money was ultimately donated to the Pediatric Aids Foundation. Surely some of the celebs there ponied up and sent in their envelopes, so to say Randall beat Rebecca by $11,000 isn’t really true. Rebecca’s event may have generated more or less than Randall’s, but it’s highly unlikely that it was $0.
