The Apprentice 12/8/05 -- countdown to coronation

Tonight we have the start of the final task – two charity events. What yuuuuuge surprise will Mark Burnett spring on these two superstars? Tune in at 9:00 and find out. (And, dammit, I’m not going to be home and forgot to set the VCR… wonder if I have time to swing by my house on my way to meet my friend … hmmm…)

So – what will it take for Rebecca to stun us all and actually win?

In order for Rebecca to win she has to have Markus assinged to her team and manage him effectively.

The best thing Randall can do if he gets Markus is to bench him.

The surprise could be as mentioned on Apprentice threads earlier is maybe bringing in candiates from previous seasons for the “employees” of the two remaining candiates, like Omarosa, Sam, Danny, Michael (season 3) basicly a bunch of Tools.

Any one else have any ideas or predictions?

The Virgin Adam will once again try to get into Trump’s good graces by offering to kill or die for him.

Little Gay Clay will deliberately try to sabotage whatever team he’s on and deep tongue kiss George just to give the old fart a heart attack and create a second vacancy.

Alla will don a dominatrix outfit and finally officially make Adam her bitch and a man

Markus will come back and somehow manage to win the competition from Randall

Rebecca will become the Fourth Mrs. Donald Trump.

Well, the editing is making Randall look like a freaking idiot. Why in the world would you need 4 people buying crap at the Party Store?

And the “stunned” look on his face when Mr. Outback said that he’d better make his brand look good. As though it wouldn’t occur to Randal to make the sponsors look good. Yeah, the party store was a dumb decision, but still…

I was joking between the team-picking at the former contestants actually showing up that it would be really funny if they thought he meant Markus rather than Mark. “Oh, well. No Backsies.”

I think they each got the Tubas of Doom once, so clearly we should be stumped as to who is going to win.

To search the shelves for Bedazzlers?

Didn’t tape – and went to see a preview of Brokeback Mountain instead of staying home like a good Trumpette – what did I miss?

Twickster! You didn’t tape it? Tsk tsk.

The show started with a rather lengthy recap from last week, the boardroom firings of Alla and Felisha, and Trump’s walk to the suite to congratulate Randall and Rebecca.

Their reward was dinner with George and Carolyn, at which time they were asked to choose their employees for the final task. There was some negotiating over who got Josh and James – R&R each wanted them both. Randal got Josh, Rebecca got James. Then they fought over another one and a coin toss by George settled that one. Rebecca chose Toral too.

The final task is a charity event. Randal is doing a softball game for Autism Speaks with Outback Steakhouse as the main sponsor, and Rebecca is doing a comedy show for the Elisabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, sponsored by Yahoo.

The editing is showing Rebecca as very organized and together, Randal less so, with comments from Outback people asking where he’s hiding out.

Of course things don’t smoothly. When the ep ended, Rebecca’s comedy host (Joe Piscopo) was possibly having to bow out because of union difficulties, and it looked like it was going to rain on Randal’s ball game. Of course he didn’t think of cover for his VIP guests, because he expected the weather to be sunny and warm.

It’s a bizarro episode – we’re seeing competent candidates with team members who appear to be sincerely trying to help their person win. And we actually heard R&R making detailed plans for their events and we saw them managing their people! It’s just freaky!

Rebecca was better edited. Maybe it’s a ruse, for the odds makers in Vegas or something.

I really like that R&R got to pick their teams this time instead of the producers playing the “cream of the crap” game and giving them the worst apprentices ever.

Rebecca definitely was painted as being more together so far, even if she picked the dreaded Toral. I suppose I understand her reasoning though.

One I didn’t get was Josh. Maybe I’m missing something, but to me he’s like George Costanza - people think he’s smart but he’s really not. What has he provided all season aside from witty interviews?

Ah Marshawn, I remember liking you not so long ago. Too bad you left in a blaze of incompetence.

Does a fish piss in his drinking water? I actually don’t know. Do fish piss?

They sure tried to play the disasters up didn’t they. Of course, Rebecca will sign some paper for the union and it’ll rain for 5 minutes on Randal and the world will keep on a turning.

I’m still suspicious about these alleged Big Yooge Tasks™ that the contestants are given at the conclusion of this process. Yahoo stated that they had never done a charity event before and wanted it done right. Well, you know what they say - when you want something done right, get a reality show contestant to do it. In three days if possible.

And let’s just take a moment to thank our various diety’s that the following things weren’t included:

  • Markus
  • Clay
  • Jessica Simpson

Overall it was a good penultimate episode - and I’m looking forward to next week.

I missed the end. Did they finish the task or is it continued til next week? Is the finale on the same time/day? How was Torale doing?

2-hour finale is next Thursday, 9-11est (I think).

Who else here thinks Joe Piscopo’s “union problems” cropped up at Trump’s suggestion when it looked like Randal’s game would get rained on? Surely not just me?

I liked having them not only getting to pick actually helpful teammantes, but negotiate for them in front of George and Carolyn. I am 100% convinced that a detailed report of the negotiation went back to Trump as well as G&C’s evaluations of how well each candidate did. These two are getting an actual serious edit – I suspect whichever one (or both) he picks will end up with a genuine job that might actually turn into something beyond a one- or two-year contract.

It’s nice to see the show ending in a blaze of competence for a change, however.

I think this too. Over at TWOP, they’re discussing the possibility thatthis was due to some creative editing, i.e. he dropped out, Rebecca and company negotiated with his people and got him back on board and THEN they had dinner with him.

Oh, Randall, Randall, Randall…what happened to you? Creative editing can only make you look so incompetent up to a certain point and the rest is up to you. Why, oh why did the whole team need to be at the party store picking out tacky favors and megaphones? And what is up with that party store thing anyway? Surely both teams got equal budgets to work with? Why then is Rebecca able to score snazzy decorations and workers to help them set up and Randall’s team is left buying cheap crap and setting up the stuff themselves?

I really hope for Randall’s sake that this is all due to an overuse of creative editing. The wacky “Loser Music” playing the background of Randall’s scenes does not bode well.

Word! And besides, isn’t this a fancy kind of event? Do millionaires get excited about goodie bags from Party City?

Hey, lorene! How are ya and thanks! I’m sure I read that part about the end of the episode. Really, I did. Unfortuantely the only thing I can be sure of retaining these days is water.

I agree. Party City? I can only guess their budget is really small for this event.

I don’t recall the goal being stated. Is it to generate the most donation money? If so, will that include promissories and later contributions like Rebecca’s envelopes that Yahoo is making her stuff in the bags? If Yahoo won’t let them collect money at the event, and the goal is cash raised, then Yahoo has severely handicapped Rebecca.

On the other hand, if the goal is profit generated, then Randall stands to win hands down. He hasn’t spent Jack. Discount party supplies. That’s it. Outback is surely providing all the seats and tents and such.

I’m going to break from the pack and predict that they both crash and burn from the JP backout and the cold rain. The finale is two hours and these events are ready to happen. That’s forty minutes of coverage tops. There might be a sudden death playoff.

I think the goal is to please the charities and the sponsors, so it’ll be another subjective judgment. Randal’s already behind the 8 ball with that Outback guy’s comments – he’s unimpressed already. It could be hard to overcome that.

The Yahoo/AIDS people said they don’t want Rebecca’s team to be pushy about donations. They were going to put envelopes in the goody bags, I think.

I didn’t hear Randal’s team asking about the mechanics of the fund-raising, but maybe I missed it.

The goal is simply to run a good event. As far as I can recall, there has never been anything quantifiable about the final task. Trump just talks to the execs, asks Mumbles The Cutest Executive what he thinks, rambles for about 119 minutes, and hires someone.
