Nope, even in a truly gender neutral, non-insulting use, “it” isn’t going to fly.

In a third person neutral narrative like “It puts the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again. Yes Precious, it gets the hose!”

To my mind, “she” is the character, “he” is the non-transsexual gay guy playing the character. Peter Pan doesn’t become a “she” when Sandy Duncan is playing him.
