It’s nice to know that with all the sticks up the asses of Boston authorities, there were still enough sticks left over for Fox News and the members of the media at that press conference.
And of course, if the governor and police don’t stick it to Adult Swim over this, it’ll probably embolden some terrorists. Probably.
Because terrorists live in fear of being sued or arrested on bogus charges?
What a bunch of losers.
“In the hospital incident, investigators believe a former hospital employee planted the phony bomb in an office at 185 Harrison Ave. He has been identified but has not been charged, the sources said.”
But the guys who didn’t intend their objects to be considered bombs have been charged. But nooooooooooo, Boston isn’t overreacting at *all *here.
Holy god!!! At work there was suddenly this unidentified mystery contraption sitting there, that had not ever been there before! Right in the middle of the hall! It had LEDs and wires! I could see no batteries though, because I didn’t want to get close enough to be caught in the blast radius! But there were definitely wires! I immediately wet myself and ran off to call GI JOE and the Bionic Man! Then some guy told me it was just an asbestos detector to monitor the construction work in the building! So I told everybody the construction company was planting fake bombs as a terrorist hoax! And the city was saved!
Hey Boston!
This is astoundingly stupid, and yet it doesn’t surprise me at all. I remember a few years back, someone left an odd looking device in the college library, next to one of the computers. The librarian brought it to me with great concern, wanting to know what it was, and had already had campus security look at it. No one could figure out what the device was, but they knew I was fairly tech savy and thought I might have an idea.
So, I looked and yup. Identified this immedietely.
It’s a good thing that this didn’t happen in Boston, or the poor kid who accidentally left his homework behind would have been arrested.
In for a penny, in for a pound.
If you’re losing, you can either back down or go balls-out. Looks like they picked option #2.
Anyways, this incident is just further proof that we have become a nation of PTSD-afflicted pussies.

Remember, people, if an analogy was perfect, it would not be an analogy; it would be the thing itself.
You have a headache. Your friend takes you to the hospital. Doctor #1 says he saw someone with your symptoms once, and that guy has cancer, so you must have cancer. Doctor #2 suggests running tests. Doctor #1 insists on more, and more expensive and time-consuming, tests than would normally be run for a headache complaint.
Your friend, who is not in the ER with you because he’s not blood, asks reception what’s going on. Nurse relays info about tests and possible cancer. Your friend says, “Well, he was drinking last night.” Nurse relays info about hangover to doctors #1 and #2.
Doctor #2 is satisfied with results of tests. Armed with the knowledge of your hangover, he sends you home with orders to come back if headache persists. Doctor #1 says “Not so fast – you owe us for the panic you caused! I’m going to charge you with fraud and wasting medical resources!”
That is what happened.
Oh, and      to the dumbass who picked up the “bomb”.
Neither. I was just trying to get clarification from you. And I agree with all the conclusions you drew.
Fuckhead.
That would explain why I have this compulsion to lick people lately.
Everyone knows a bad analogy is just like diving for pigs in the rain, so thank you for revising mine for me. It’s a lot closer to what I was going for!
This is the stupidest thing ever(well other then our president)
Ok someone calls says there is a bomb. Well that warrents getting people out of the area and checking it out. They got a few more calls. They should have checked those out as well.
Rather then just doing that, they decided to get on the air and anounce bombs were placed throughout the city. By noon various authorities had been informed of what the devices were. It wasn’t until the 8 O-clock news the general public was informed they were not bombs.
So they blew something out of preportion. Then rather then admitting they were overzelious, they allowed fearmongering to continue and are now going to punish people because they overreacted and overspent on this situation.
Some people just can’t admit they fucked up under any circumstances huh?
Yeah, but it should bear at least passing resemblance to the real thing. And in your version 2, doctor 1 got a whole lot more reasonable up until the end.
To restate, we seem to be in agreement that the “bomb” should have been investagated.
As for whether the perps should be jailed, fined, or whatever, I’m on the fence, but leaning towards not. I see no problem with bringing them in for questioning, however.
As to the assertions made that the whole city was freaking out – no, it wasn’t.
Fuck us if we can’t take a joke, huh?
I posed it that way because IMO, the Boston PD was reasonable up until the point when they started blaming other people for their reaction.
Calling in a suspicious object: reasonable.
Inspecting it: reasonable.
Calling in bomb squad: reasonable. Closing down disputed area: reasonable. Testing object to find out if it’s a bomb: reasonable.
Going on national news saying, “It COULD have been a bomb!” and charging people with felony fraud: totally unreasonable.
Where did you hear that? I had NPR on all day and they made a point of saying the devices were being investigated as potentially dangerous but that was all. I agree that if any news agency was reporting that they were bombs, that is irresponsible. I have not heard any reports that the police were saying at any point that they were actually bombs.
There was a press conference just after 4 PM. That is about the time that TBS stepped in with their announcement.
The Globe is reporting here that the marketing firm that hired the men to put up the signs knew as early as 1:25 PM what was happening and told the men not to say anything.
I don’t think “fraud” is quite the word you’re looking for there. Although I do like the mental image:
Dude: Holy shit, I think that’s a bomb!
Guy: No, it’s okay, it’s just a bunch of lights.
Dude: What? Not a bomb?! What a rip off!

tdn, I think you got a couple of sentences out of order in that last post. Let me switch them for you:
There you go!
Priceless!
As I said, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to have hauled in the guys for questioning. Arrested them? Seems like a bit of overkill. Does anyone know if they’ve been released yet? Or what they were charged with?
And I share Sal’s concern that this type of thing may become more common if TB gets away with this. But I’m having a hard time thinking of what law was broken.
