Two huge blasts at the finish line. People are dead.
I’ve only seen reports of injuries so far - any reliable claims of deaths?
I haven’t heard any confirmed deaths yet, 6 reported injured.
I don’t think anyone I know is in the race this year, but there may be some in the stands. Today is Patriot’s Day in MA, so many people are not working.
Story from CNN.com’s website They’re reporting at least 6 dead, dozens injured, including people who have lost limbs
Fuck, what is wrong with people. It’s a damn foot race!
I don’t know what is sadder, the fact that people will do something like this or the fact when I first heard about it, the first thought in my mind was, “I’m surprised something like this hasn’t happen before.”
I may have jumped the gun on fatalities. I’m getting updates from a friend at work who has a non-media source. Let’s hope I’m wrong.
Now the question is “Which assholes did this?”
Edit, replying to Diceman: Wrong link? That’s a local Boston station, says 6 injured and no mentions of deaths or missing limbs.
We don’t know for sure it’s bombs yet, either - could be a gas main, perhaps. One report I was reading said the explosions were actually inside a hotel near the finish line, but sounds like no one knows what’s up.
More edit: Admittedly the timing is suspicious.
I really really hope this isn’t some sort of ‘protest’ since today is tax day, April 15. Having it in Boston, home of the Boston Tea Party, though makes it smell really bad.
Fuck. My brother in law is running in it. Is there anywhere to find out whre the runners are, I know they wear those GPS tracking chips to track their time.
Christ please let him be OK.
Here, maybe? I hope he’s alright. And I hope this is an accident, but it’s hard to be optimistic. And I hope there are as few injuries as can be- that maybe this wasn’t as bad as it looks.
Boston Herald site must be slammed, it’s loading very slowly for me.
Here’s some photos at Think Progress. Damn, that’s…a lot of blood.
Looks like the first explosion occured behind the stands. Officials and spectators were most at risk. It appeared to come from right in front of the hotel.
If the explosions were from two different places, chances are it was deliberate, right? Would there be any chance of a follow-on explosion from something like this? Of course the reports might be wrong and there may have been only one or they were from the same place.
Seems both explosions were inside stores, the Marathon Sports store at the finish line, and the Lenscrafters a block or so up the street. I heard both, and I live 10 miles away.
No confirmed deaths, but a lot of blood. The Marathon medical tents are right there though.
Yes, I’d bet some teabagger(s) on Tax Day.
I can’t reach my dad. He lives right there. I hope he’s okay.
It’s still the same story for me. Part of it says, “Store fronts have been blown out, and there have been reports of dozens of injuries. Witnesses said several victims lost limbs, the race was stopped and the area is being evacuated.”
Thanks Marley. It looks like he finished ~1:45 pm so he was done before this happened. But I think he was coaching other runners so hopefully they weren’t hanging around anywhere dangerous.
Arrrrrrgh, for the first time I miss having a Facebook page because I’m sure my sister has hers plastered with the latest news but she’s not answering my text messages
Here’s a quote from the Think Progress website.
