Eh, it’s OK. The one I had - it had a better mouth-feel than the usual rubber beef they do. I didn’t have the rubbery, dry, fibrous and very fatty experience that others are reporting. The taste worked, a decent combo of salty beefy gooey smokey. But MY GOD are their fries HORRID!
HOW horrid? Do tell.
I never eat at Arby’s anymore despite the fact that it’s the second closest fast food place to my house. They are kind of pricey unless you have coupons and I never mess with them.
I remember back in the day they had a sandwich called the Swiss King that was a favorite. It was roast beef, bigger than the standard sandwich, with swiss cheese and shredded lettuce and covered in a white mayo sauce. I worked second shift and often stopped to get a couple on the way to work and ate them on my lunch break.
I worked at Arby’s about the time they were phasing out the Swiss King. No lettuce, cole slaw. Unless yours was doing it wrong.
I’m almost certain they were using shredded lettuce here. But this was around 1980 (Indiana) so I certainly could be mis-remembering. I usually did a few bong hits before leaving for work, so, there’s that to consider.
The only one in my town is like, a 25 minute drive from my house. I haven’t been there in years, but I remember the curly fries were amazing. No strong feelings about the sammich one way or another.
Hazeldean at Castlefrank?
I went to Arby’s last week for old time’s sake. I got the turkey bacon ranch wrap (which was supposed to have 3 onions on it and actually had closer to 15 so even when I took them all off all I could taste was onion). The turkey was very good. The bacon was gross. The ranch was gross. The onions were really gross. The wrap was a wrap.
I got the curly fries. I have fond memories of Arby’s fries. These were very disappointing. Either my standards have gone up (which I doubt) or their standards have gone down.
I got a root beer. They didn’t put the lid on all the way. I passed it over my lap in the car and ended up with about 20oz of root beer in my lap (while on my way to work) so I ended up being late because I had to go home and change.
All in all, other than the turkey being really good once I pulled it off the onion infestation, it was a disappointing experience.
Before last week, the last time I had been to Arby’s was right around when they first added the deli sandwiches and I remember being very impressed with the quality. The sandwich last week would have been quite good with no bacon, mayo instead of ranch, and no onions.
You know it! And I never bother to go out to Bell’s corners unless I’m watching a hockey game, lol.
I have to admit, I’ve always loved Arby’s Beef and Cheddars drenched in Arby’s Sauce. :: drools :: Haven’t had one in years, though.
There used to be one in Oberlin, Ohio in the late Eighties, but it closed a long time ago. I assumed the whole chain was defunct.
I will be having one or two tomorrow for lunch - however, mine are NO Arby’s Sauce and with extra cheese. I’m freakin’ drooling right now for one!
I was wanting to try the new brisket one but reviews here have kind of changed my mind. I might get one anyways.
I always put the horsey sauce on my Beef and Chedders. I usually get two and throw one set of buns away and put the contents all on one set. I swear that’s how big they used to be.
Nothing beats their jalapeno poppers with the bronco berry sauce. The cream cheese is way better than the chedder ones like at Jack in the Box. One of the best fast food items ever. That’s usually my main reason for going and then when I’m there I think, “Ah, might as well get a beef and chedder while I’m here.”
My first experience with Arby’s was in the late 1960’s, when they roasted their beef right there, in a big display roaster by the counter. Damn, those were good sandwiches. Wish they served that kind again.
My grandparents claimed that their quality tanked after the wage and price freeze of 1971. I see from wiki that the company was founded in 1964.
I like Arbys, but they’re pricey for fast food. Still, I can stomach their food better than most of McDonalds food.
I usually just get the Large Beef N Cheddar- whatever they call it. Here they have 3 sizes of the “Classic” Roast Beef and 2 sizes of the Cheddar. Though your 2 sandwich method might be better and cheaper- since I get at least 1 sheet of coupons in the mail every week, and they always include up to 6 for $1.99 each or BOGO.
Love the jalapeno bites and the sauce. I miss the loaded potato bites, though. As well as the baked potatoes, concrete shakes, and breakfast (grew up with it but not available where I live now).
I like the Brisket, but I’ve probably never had a “real” brisket before. This might be the first time I’ve ever had something resembling one.
I can’t wait to try the brisket, I love ‘limited time’ recipes that disappear in a month. Anything to relieve the boredom of fast food. Though I loved and still love Arby’s, good old days be damned, I think they’re still good eats, they have a lot of choices. My favorite is the Arby-Q, drenched in a sweet barbeque sauce on a bun, love it.
Interesting. I can get an Arby’s meal for around $3.99 anytime. Most other places where I live are $6-8 for a basic meal, including McDonald’s. Though Arby’s might come out more because they are the only place with any sides/apps worth purchasing a la carte. Still I could get a Beef N Cheddar or Roast Beef with moz sticks or poppers for $5. At McDonalds where I live, every meal is now at least $6 except the 2 cheeseburger meals. There’s the Dollar Menu, but now it’s more than $1. Arby’s now has some sort of “value menu” that’s decent. I have Steak N Shake- which is $4.49 or more for any sandwich I would get. A meal is $8something if I get a shake. Sometimes they have $4.99 coupons in the mail. Wendy’s runs $7-8 for their premium sandwich meals. A #1 single small meal is $5.69. If I go to Popeye’s or KFC I spend at least $7 to get regular chicken pieces, side, biscuit, drink. BK makes me sick- I go there when I want to make myself sick. They are the typical $6 or so for a meal. $8 if you get a triple whopper or something. I guess Sonic is pretty cheap- they remind me of school cafeteria food. Dairy Queen has a $5 lunch that includes a sundae- I might try that. I like a Raising Cane’s meal that is $6.99. Taco Bell can be cheap. A cheeseburger, reg fries, and fountain drink at 5 Guys runs about $11, but is worth more than twice whatever McDonalds charges.
Fast food in general seems pretty pricey to me. I think I will run to the store and buy a pound of beef and 5lbs of potatoes for 5 bucks instead.
And those jamocha shakes! Mmmmm. Unfortunately, the strength of its flavor varies enormously from restaurant to restaurant.
As I was washing dishes tonight I remembered that the plastic tray I use as a cutting board was swiped by my then girlfriend from an Arbys in about 1978. Do you think they’d press charges if I tried to return it now? We used it as a rolling tray so maybe it still has traces of weed on it.
I better just burn it.
