Archie and the gang gets updated.

Crud. Fixed link.

I dunno… The artwork looks OK, but it doesn’t really look like Archie

I think I’ll reserve full judgement until I see how the more comic stripish characters (Jughead, in particular, but also Mr. Weatherbee, Big Ethel, the schoolmarmish teacher whose name I don’t remember, etc.) translate.

And Eve? I’m kind of ashamed to expose that I know this, but the short-haired girl with Betty in the black & white strips isn’t Veronica. That is probably Midge, the girlfriend of the big dumb football player, Moose.

Doesn’t look like Veronica or Midge. Or Betty, for that matter. Reminds me of Hillay Duff and LaLaine reprising their roles of Lizzie McGuire and Miranda.

If the graphic novel has Betty’s father looking like Robert Carradine, I’ll just call that case closed.

Also, could you link to a pic of the short-haired girl wearing black and white stripes? i’m not seeing 'em.

In the B&W strips–i.e., the pencil drawing, second link in the OP.

Ugh!!

Reminds of the South Park episode where the boys are rendered in real life drawings!

:smack:

:smack: :smack:

I own a copy of that.

I don’t like it. Like I said in THIS thread I was a dead ringer for [the original] Archie when I was a teenager (still am. Just older. )

And I didn’t know Lodge was a Spanish name. Veronica looks Latino on that pic… Are they changing the nationality of the comic too? Why don’t they leave the Archies as they were and just introduce new characters to reflect modern day teens? No need to screw with the old ones.

Archie looks better in that B&W proof; I could never understand before why girls liked him, because he looked like Carrot Top with a haircut and a lot of facial injuries. This one actually looks boyishly handsome.

Betty and Veronica, however, look awful. The old versions were raving beauties - statuesque, gorgeous women. The reason guys have always had the “Betty or Veronica?” debate is because they were dream sexual partners. You wanted to do 'em both, really, any order, or even together. The new versions are awful; the first, color proof makes them look plain, and the second makes them look like 14-year-old ginas. You can find 50 better looking girls in any high school.

I got more PT in my teens than my blonde/brown hair cronies did in HS, college & adult life combined.

Creepy. [url=http://www.topps.com/candy/brands/NewBazooka/Bazooka.htm]Bazooka Joe has been updated, too, though not in this icky True Romance sort of fake realism.

I hate it. I loved B&V as a kid, and it was only as a young adult that I realized much of what I liked about the comics was Dan DeCarlo’s artwork. Clean lines, bright colors, obviously cartoons (the eyes, the helmet hairstyles) but good perspective and natural movement – nothing that struck you as “badly drawn.” When they started running more stuff that was obviously people just imitating DDeC, I disliked it – this I hate, especially B&V who look like rejects from ElfQuest. But I’m not their audience anymore.

I would love to own an original or print of DDec’s work. Instead, all I have is a cardboard box of Double Digests from the '70s.
