**Here’s a movie stumper–Fill in the 4th film:

Gone With the Wind
A Streetcar Named Desire
Network
???

These four films have one unique thing in common that no other movie in history can claim. It is an ultra-specific answer, but one that does not require having actually seen all four films. What is the missing film?**

Please, please, in the name of whatever, tell us the answer!

Gone With the Wind
A Streetcar Named Desire
Network
Citizen Kane
What are movies that I have never seen.
/dr/

It’s probably something obscure, like the gaffers for all four films happened to live at the same address.

Sorry, I hadn’t posted a reply because I didn’t see anyone even really try to answer the question. This is my prize movie trivia question and wanted to at least have somebody earn it, not just…shrug “I give up.”

There are a few hints in the original thread, though, which I’ll repeat here:

1. The answer has something to do with the Academy Awards (and not some minutae about the ceremony but about actual winners)
2. Despite, Hint #1, this particular movie (unlike the other three) was not itself an Oscar-winner or nominee.
3. The movie is listed on the IMDB as made in 1986.

Here’s another hint: The film is American, but the director is not.

And of course, repeating the original question: There is only one possible answer in the history of movies that rounds out this foursome in this very specific commonality.

No, because there are dozens (hundreds?) of possible films that would qualify. Similarly, unless PStarr has seen every movie in the history of the world ever ( ) except those four, his/her answer is incorrect also.

Repeat: This answer is unique and no other film ever can claim to have this one thing in common with the other three. And you do not have to have seen any or all of the films to figure this out (though it would help to a limited extent).

Now, the easiest way to approach this question is (1) What do these three have uniquely in common, and (2) what one other movie shares this feature? This first question is extremely easy to unearth given the hints you have above (though it requires a small amount of digging). The second part is admittedly tougher, but–once you have the first part–an ultimate shoe-in.

So, that’s it. Happy to help & advise, but will not simply blurt it out. Good Luck.

OK, does it have to do with Kevin Bacon?

Sid and Nancy?

Ok, ok…is it:

College Co-ed Cum Guzzlers Part 8?

I can see a connection between the first two movies, but I’m having the devil of a time tying in Network. I think once I can do that, I might be able to figure out the 4th movie. However, I think the acutal common element is different than the only one I can think of for the first two.

The 4th film is 2001 A Space Odyssey and what it has in common with the other three is that they were all made in Cinerama and 2001 was the last film made using this process. HEY! You guys got a better answer???

Quasi

Forgot about the 1986 hint… Oh well… :o

Quasi

They have a Part 8!!

:Jumps in car and screeches off to the …ummm…tasteful art store:

I think it’s “Children of a Lesser God”, but it might be “Hannah and Her Sisters”.

I’ll keep researching.

Nah – I was looking at awards – they all won best actress, most won other acting and supporting acting awards but don’t otherwise fit the criteria. Hmmph!

Okay, now I think it was 84 Charing Cross Road.

Something to do with the popularity of the original work before it was adapted to the screen? They were all Reader’s Digest Condensed Books?

I will NOT repeat the vicious rumor I heard that jarbaby was a fluffer on that movie (and several of the prequels)…Nope …not gonna do it…wouldn’t be right

I have a couple ideas, but I was wondering if you could clear up that hint. Are you saying that the was not nomimated for any Oscars. Or do you mean that it simply wasn’t nominated for best picture, but might have been in other categories?

CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON!

Well, the director is not American…

Actually, none of the first three films were in Cinerama. Are you sure you know what that is?

Streetcar was a play and Network was an Original Screenplay, so nope. Anyway, there are probably hundreds of Reader’s Digest Condensed books that were also movies–these four movies have something unique NO OTHER MOVIE EVER can claim. However, a previous post of yours was on the right track…

The thing the four movies have in common has to do with the Academy Awards, but Movie #4 was itself not nominated for any Oscar in any category.

it might have something to do with the presenters at the awards ceremony. or something like that-- because the connection has to do with the Academy Awards, but not necessarily to do with the oscars and the movies themselves, since the 4th movie wasnt nominated. this came to mind because of the hint that you don’t need to have seen the movies in question to figure it out.

just tossing out ideas…

**

My roommate and I have been trying to figure this out since it was first posted. Thanks to Rilchiam for this thread and Archive Guy for the question.

Okay, Hint #1: “…something to do with the Academy Awards…”

Does this hint involve the Academy Awards won for each picture or does it include Academy Award winners in each of the films’ casts?

Best Actress
Vivian Leigh – GWTW
Vivian Leigh – SND
Faye Dunaway – N

Best Supporting Actress
Hattie McDaniel – GWTW
Kim Hunter – SND
Beatrice Straight – N
Hint #2: “…this particular movie (unlike the other three) was not itself an Oscar-winner or nominee…”

Did the missing movie win any kind of award—BAFTA, Golden Globe, etc?

Hint #3: “The movie is listed on the IMDB as made in 1986. Here’s another hint: The film is American, but the director is not.”

Was it also released in 1986?

“What do these three have uniquely in common?”

Apart from the three films having won the same Academy Awards (for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress), I’m having a hard time finding any other similarities. Is the thing they have in common directly related to those awards?

Both GWTW and Streetcar are based on earlier works of fiction or drama, and both won the Pulitzer Prize (GWTW–Novel; Streetcar–Drama). This seems to eliminate Network since it was written directly for the screen, although I’m now going through the Pulitzer archives to see if anything turns up. Even if Network could be related to the films using this criterion, Streetcar would be eliminated because it did not win an Oscar for writing.

Since I’m having such a hard time finding any other similarities between the three movies, is the answer directly related to the Academy Awards (or is that hint just an easy way to identify the similarities in the films)?

Okay, does it have anything to do with Oscar records? GWTW—First African American winner; Streetcar–Most Acting Awards; Network–Posthumous acting award. The last movie? Record for not being nominated?

Does the answer have anything to do with censorship? Pushing the envelope so to speak. Gone with the Wind had the famous “I don’t give a damn.” speech, Streetcar had Blanche’s rape that they wanted to cut, Network? I’m not sure how Network relates.

I listed all of my theories hoping that you might steer me in the right direction. Thanks in advance for any and all help.
